Exclamation motor change

I'm installing a 1995 cherokee 4.0 motor into a 2001 cherokee, and the 2001 is distributerless and the 1995 has a distributer. What needs to be done? Do I just switch to the one from 2001 4.0 and install coil pack?

Take the sensors, ignition, and fuel parts off your 2001 and put them on the 95 donor engine. Go ahead and move the entire intake manifold and throttle body too so all your stuff plugs in the same. Then everything will work the same as far as your computer knows.

Better buy the exhaust manifold gaskets and compare them to see how well they match. You might need to do some things.

This help?

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

ALL sensors, electronics, manifolds, accessories, and flywherl need to be changed. Nothing that isn't the head or block is compatible with how things were done in 2001.

The comment about exhaust ports lining up is on point. It's been done but you may need a small adapter plate

Thanks for all the Info. Do you know where to get a manifold adapter? Back in the late 60's and early 70's never had to change all this stuff like you do on these late models. Dang it !!

I have done (3) swaps of 96 earlier motors in 2000-01 Cherokees

Its simple,

1) Swap intake over (with all the sensors and so fourth)
2) Swap out Distributor for Cam Sensor (The biggest pain is figuring out how to set the sensor for install... do a google or youtube search (basically you have to put cylinder 1 at top of compression stroke, I put a pin/toothpick that holds cam sensor center in place with its outer shell through a hole, and install it), it is suggested you have a jeep dealer fine tune it with a computer, but I never have) - NOTE: If you can put the 2000 motor before pulling it cylinder 1 at top of the compression stroke and make the cam sensor position this can help)
3) Make brackets (Chevy Starter Shims work great) to hold Coil Pack in place bracketing it to a couple valve cover bolts.
4) BUY an after market header.... ITS A MUST ..... the exhaust ports on 96 and older motors are larger, and a stock 2000 exhaust manifold will not fit over the ports.... I have used Rugged Ridge Headers as well as eBay Headers with success (if you have the money get a Banks header) - putting 30K plus on the first Jeep since the swap (bolting the header in has some real pain in the *** bolts, try to do header install with the motor out before installing it) PS: I always use Permatex Copper RTV on both sides of the header gasket per a drag racing friend of mine's suggestion

Link below I think is the same header I used on my last swap $148... I been happy with it.

Be careful with the four bolts that hold the AC compressor in, they like to snap. (use anti seize when re-installing)

I have had no regrets with any of the swaps, Neon Injectors, aftermarket muffler, and Cold Air Intake really wake them up.

If you have any questions, just Hollar.
