Micro Balloons as sound deadening?
Hey Goatherder, Ianf406 et al,
Based on your post, I was thinking of taking your advice and using the 3M ceramic micro-ballons, using the 610 grade due to the larger size. There are two applications I would need this for. One is the advertized advantage of using it for gloss control as I try to get the proper gloss for the semi-gloss black of the interior dash, sail pillars etc. (this is a '65 GTO and not a Jeep). More relevant for this post of course is the thermal and sound dampening properties. Regarding the latter, I was thinking of using some bedliner that I already have mixed with the micro-ballons. The bedliner is white if it matters, and I was thinking of coating the floors and ceiling with it underneath the carpet and padding. I would mix this with the ceramic beads and if proper, the normal air-filled micro-balloons as well. My question is whether I should use BOTH the ceramic AND the normal micro-ballons. My thinking is that this would be more ideal as the ceramic would insulate against heat and the air-filled would dampen sound. I supposed I would use one layer or more each, but I am really unsure if I should mix them together for each layer or use two different layers as I mentioned OR perhaps I would layer it and use 4 coatings interlaced. So for example layers as follows: normal beads, ceramic, normal beads, ceramic. Do you have any suggestions for this? I also was contemplating using memory foam for padding and/or aluminum sheets at least in the ceiling to reflect nose and perhaps add a layer of air between the ceiling surface and the aluminum sheets. Any suggestions from anyone would be helpful and thanks in advance!

So I did it today.. Ill post back with results.. I will add this... I knew Microballons were small/light but no idea how small/light. I poured them in and had to run away from it as it was like flour in the air... (except glass/ceramic)... Didn't want it in my eyes/ lungs. Really weird stuff. Reminds me of liquid nitrogen when on a solid surface. I would highly recommend a respirator when dealing with it. Mixed great with the liner... I have another coat in the am.
I'd bet the directions on the product did too........................
