ok so i was out tonight driving around and decided to hit up some trails... it was pouring and there was some nice thick mud which i got stuck in for a good amount of time... i managed to get some traction and power out but it got me thinking on how to fix the problem...

my question is would it be more benificial for me to go for more agressive mud tires or a rear locker? i figured i would end up getting both at some point but which should i get 1st? thanks for the help!!!

If it were me i would go with the mud tire if you plan on driving in the mud more often. A locker will help as well but that mud tire will make a huge difference.

A locker doesn't do much good if the tires you have can't grip. A locker "compliments" good mud tires

I'd recommend a set of good M/T's. I bought a powertrax no-slip and put it in my 98. I ran a set of goodyear wrangler tires (the cheap $75 A/T's) and as much as the locker saved me those tires really were useless, even with the locker engaged it would just sit and spin. If you can get a good set of M/T's id recommend that over the locker for now, unless you do alot of rock crawling.

Better to have 1 mud tire grip then 2 locked slicks spinning in the mud lol

Gotta have mudders... any street tire and many AT's will turn straight into slicks in the mud.

My thoughts exactly. Even if you weren't planing on mudding all that often a better traction tire is going to do just that, give you better traction.

Depends, do you like to be able to hear while driving down the road? Just kidding Those are obviously a good mudder but other tires like the BFG M/T KM2 are very popular as well, and probably handle better than those swampers in most every other terrain then mud.

Good tires before locker, but both make a massive difference. I love my km2s for all around. I do A LOT of mud. Have even mud raced with them and came in 2nd place. They pack a little at first but once you get them spinning and cleaned out they bite really good and stay clean. Tire pressure also makes a huge difference in mud. Mine seem to love 12 psi. At 20 psi they feel like an all terrain, under 15 psi they come alive.

Boggers and tsls are great for propelling you forward quickly and they dig hard. But once you are getting close to stuck and stop forward momentum the only direction they're going is down. They almost dig too much sometimes. I like having a mud terrain a lot of times because once I'm stuck I can almost always work it forward and back til it comes out. With a bogger you're just going to dig a deeper hole. I guess what I'm trying to say is, with a more aggressive mudder, you have a better chance at first, but once you're stuck you're stuck.
