I don't get why people are obsessed with diesel smoke. I mean, from time to time I can understand smoking but the guys who sit there and tune their 12 valves rich or run smoke tunes on late model diesels I don't understand. Some of those guys are the reason why the emission hammer got brought down and made all of the new engines utter garbage.

But when you do that with ricers you're not over fueling. Diesel smoke is caused by more fuel than air to burn in...it's super heated exhaust gases and 2 phase diesel fuel. Your then taking that mixture and forcing it through a turbine with impeller blades designed to handle super heated mixed vapor, not a mixture containing that along with a 2 phase fuel. Causes more wear and tear on the turbo.

Thank you! Finally someone other than me thinks its stupid. As for the imports, I owned a 92 Eagle Talon TSi and my wife had a 92 Acura Integra, no fart cans at all. My Talon had a Dynomax Turbo muffler and I put a Flowmaster 40 series on the wifes Integra. Both had great low tones without the "farting" or "feeeed..meeeee..mooore..riiiice" (1-2-3-4 gears) sounds.

I realize what causes it. It's the mentality I'm referring to . If you're sitting there "rolling coal" because you think it looks cool, you're just a ricer in a truck

x4 Some of the videos YouTube has tried to get me to watch of this is just embarrassing for our species. It's analogous to Jeep people breaking in to protected areas, wheeling illegally and throwing trash everywhere. All I see is wasted fuel. That **** ain't cheap and I don't wanna breathe that crap, tune your engine properly.

I've actually started to get respect for some of the tuner crowd through shows like Mighty Car Mods. Some of the stuff they do is pretty cool. I really enjoyed one episode where they did a custom turbo-back exhaust on a Subaru.

Probably…no. I've gotten out of the loud and annoying stage of my life. I like exhausts that actually sound good, most factory exhausts don't sound (but then there is also the performance aspect to it). My 4.2 in my Trailblazer for example, sounds so quite I can't even tell it's running…which brings up the question, is it running? There is sound, and then there is just annoying. There are very few engines that I actually think sound okay without mufflers…V6's will never sound good to me, I6's and V8's will always sound better.

My old MS3 was extremely loud. Full 3 inch turbo back exhaust no mufflers but after driving my quite XJ its so nice. I would not go back. Especially with the little gain in performance.

How many times have you been warming it up in the winter, get back in and grind te gear off the starter because you forgot it was running? (used to do that with my very quiet Tercel)

ive done that a couple times on my volvo when i switched from my straight piped jeep. im fine with it being loud, the only think i cant stand is the resonance inside. when starts to shake around and my eardrums are vibrating i cant stand it. my friends ram is cut off beneath the truck and it sounds good outside but i hate riding in it.

I don't do that anymore…it has a mind of it's own when it's idling. I can pull up to a red light with 40 psi of oil pressure, by the time the light turns green I'll have watched oil pressure gauge dance between 40 and 0 (never fully returning to the previous pressure high) then drop to zero for good, lighting the dash up like a christmas tree…burns about 3 quarts of oil in a 5000 mile period when it does that though. Stopped doing that here now that it's cooling down. Now it likes to stall out at random when idling (I often don't hear or feel it stall) and I come to the "Y U NO GO?" question…but it doesn't burn oil. Late spring is just about the only time of the year it likes.

My Cherokee is a noisy thing do drive. I'd go crazy between the wind noise, whine from the tires, heat coming off the transmission (it's nice in the winter though)…least I have the exhaust to listen to (which it's currently running the Dynomax muffler, been debating going to a glasspak) and the radio (which I can't crank too loud cause I keep blowing rear speakers trying to drown out the tires).
