LP D30 to HP D30 with vacuum disco
I have a 2001 xj and thinking of regear. The cheapest route I found is to swap in a 4:10 axle.
I can find a HP D30 with vacuum disco in 4.10 locally. Should I go for it? Or I should hold out until I find a HP 30 without disco?
I am not into crazy rock crawling, but I want my rig to be as strong as possible as a trail rig thats still capable of DD.
Everyone said vacuum disco is bad, but I could take advantage of the MPG saving (if there is any) because it drag less moving parts, right?

I believe you can swap in a passenger side axle shaft from a non - vac. disconnect axle &weld a patch over the cover & you'll be better off.
In all reality, I'd check out your P&P's. I found 3 XJ's w/ HP30's & 8.25's. $100-$150/axle when I was there last.

You could do that too, no need to really weld the plate over the shift fork location, you can use the 4 bolts to attach a flat plate.

Rustys sells the kit to delete the vacuum system. It's $18. Just swap in your passenger axle shaft in from your LP dana 30

I believe you can swap in the axle shafts from your current LP axle. You will need to change the seal on the disconnect side. A metal plate bolted on in place of the vacuum assembly will cover the hole. Just a dust cover really since you are relocating the seal in board.

The thought is that the CAD housing is stronger than the non-disco style. I beat on mine for many years before finally going to the non-disco axle. Off the shelf trusses won't work on it, so if you ever plan on doing that know ahead of time you'll be fabbing it yourself. The right UCA mount is also pure beef compared to the non-disco. MPG savings is not even worth considering. You can also run your larger 5-760X u-joints shafts.
