Is there a difference between the Aussie and PowerTrax really? I can understand the rear not being as big of a deal as the front.

I agree with frank, that is definitely the ideal setup , I run an Aussie out back and it performs flawlessly. The little noise it does make does not bother me, its a jeep after all.
As far as the difference they are all pretty comparable, I shopped by price.

Although they both do the same thing, the Aussie is Gawd-Awful loud. Some folks will tell you to run thicker gear oil to quiet it down, but having opened a diff in the winter and seen just how thick that stuff gets....not my idea of a good solution.

i have a 98 classic with the front lock with a sparten locker and the only time i hear a noise is on full lock like making u turns , it is not too noise .i do not have the rear locker because it is my dd and i live in the city so i have to punch it around the trafic some times so thats why i did not do the rear locker.
off road this thing is the best ,i noted befor i had the locker in that on the trail most of my loss of traction was comming from the front wheels so i swap in the locker and now i dont lose the traction and can go up almost any hill clime if it was not for my week cinverter but for $230 you cant beat it.

I haven't given any thought to changing gears..... How does that screw with locker choices?

A full case locker for 3.72 and numerically lower gears won't work with deeper gears. If you get a lunchbox locker that uses the stock carrier then it doesn't matter. On a Dana 30 that is

It doesn't. If you opt for a full case locker simply by the correct one for your gear ratio.

the only thing that you have to keep in mind, is that if you want a locker now and want to change gears later, you will most likely have to buy a different locker. If you dont foresee changing gears, dont worry about it, if you think you may at some point, do it at the same time.

That's only for full-case lockers though right?

I have a 98 XJ that I put a powertrax in. Something was wrong, because it never worked. It was far worse than the open rear. It would spin one tire, and torque steer badly. Richmond Gear customer service was VERY unhelpful, with an attitude. This forum kept telling me I broke a tab when I put it in. It came out in one piece. It now is collecting dust on my shopbench. They may work most of the time, but if they don't it is a costly mistake. The money you spend will be gone. I put in an Auburn LSD, and have never been happier. It is my daily driver.
