My 96 and 91 has energized plugs for lights under the dash, left and right side. Works with the dome lights and door button.
Also a plug for speakers.
Have a look, they just float around under the dash.

I'm thinking about doing this too. I need to buy some LED strips from the store and see if I can just splice into the existing wiring.

Check for empty plugs under the dash first. I just plugged in LED strips. They come on when the door opens.

Too bad, could not tell what year yours was.
Here is the connection on my 96. It hides above the 'hood open' lever. Might be behind your kick panel.

you should have lights there... drivers side is just behind the obd (where you scan for codes) the passenger side is just under dash against the pilar (closest to the door)
