no way to tell you honestly... some 3" lifts you can keep stock shocks and some shocks wont reach.
either way i think anybody would tell ya to get new ones... even if the old ones reach your at risk of blowing the shock out or even worse the shock could tear the mount off of the axle
so I say yeah get new ones
or jk rubicon ones work to with some fab

I just did that and the stock shocks "bottom up". It feels like the whole body is coming off the frame but that is impossible. I put a couple sandbags in the back and it dont do it any more. My shocks are on the way and i will have em as soon as i get em.
Yes, you need bigger shocks.

It may "work" but you'll wear them out much quicker.

People make shocks for 0-1" lift, 1-2" lift, and so on...and they do so for a reason.

I did a 3" lift recently. The fronts seemed fine but the rears were maxed out. So I changed all 4 corners. Very happy that I did.

Buy some JK Rubicon shocks and some Bar Pin Eliminators as well. Makes them easier to install IMO, and gives you a little more length to them.
JK shocks ride great on the XJ btw.

I was running stock shocks with a `4" lift and it was terrible. rode rine on flat roads but going over speebumps etc, the shocks (especially the rears) would max out and clunk nasty. finally got new ones and its night and day. I dont know how I rode like that for a few months.
