Just as the thread reads. After installing my lift shackles, the added length interferes with the exhaust pipe, causing it to rattle sometimes at idle and at certain speeds. It's actually very annoying.


Is the solution to just cut the end of the exhaust pipe off? Will that cause the fumes from the exhaust to enter the vehicle if the pipe does not extend to the end of the bumper like the stock setup does? If I have to cut it, that's fine, but I don't want to cut it and then have to breathe fumes all day when I drive.


Any suggestions guys? Maybe first hand experience on what you all did?

 

A picture would help. It sounds like your exhaust isn't hanging perfectly where it needs to be.

 

I ran into the problem yesterday when installing my RC shackles. I plan on going down to my local exhaust place and have them chop the tip and redirect it straight out. heres some pics. ill post the after pics later this week!

 

with my lift shackle, the shackle bolt touched the pipe causing the noise

i just wrapped silicone tape around the pipe to cushion it

 

Just cut it off right at the bend, that's a goofy looking oversized tip anyway.

 

Cut it. You shouldnt notice any exhaust fumes. Surprisingly I dont and my exhaust dumps at the axle because of JKS xover shock mounts.

 

Mines dumped over the axle, don't notice any fumes. First I had issues with it hitting the shackle, then I ripped it off offroad, so I just said screw it I'm not putting all that back on. Haven't had an issue since

 

Wow that's an obnoxious pipe above!! Mine is just the basic stock exhaust. All new hangers, so I know they're in the right place.


I guess I'll just cut it before the shackle. If there are no fumes for you guys then I can only hope for the same result.

If you cut it before the shackle, just make sure you won't be dumping the exhaust directly onto the bushing. They can melt.

when I still had mine out that far I just cut it back a good bit and put on a turn down. But who needs exhaust anyway? Just unbolt it at the header and let er rip!!!

 

Never be stupid enough to cut the exhaust off before it exits around the rear bumper on something you drive with the windows up like with a heater or AC on. Most of all on something as old as our old XJ's or any type of SUV, are the chance of fumes coming into the passenger area is very high from a lot of different places.


When I was in the towing business one of my trucks towed a Chevy Blazer from Lookout MT. in CO. that had two teenagers that had been parked up there listening to music. A County Sheriff found the 2 of them dead on his patrol at 3 am in the morning.


The corner ruled the deaths to carbon monoxide poisoning due to the exhaust pipe being cut off after a set of new glass pack mufflers the boy had installed a week earlier.......


I had the same issue with my Boomerang Shackles hitting the exhaust, was tight against it in fact. I went to the muffler that installed my exhaust system and had them pull the pipe and place it in the tubing bended and reshape it to miss the shackle and still come out straight the back. It only cost $20 and took them about 15 min to do it.

 

I don't have a ton of rust holes in the rear of my jeep, the whole interior is sealed with sound deadener and seam sealer, I don't sit in my jeep and let it run, never smelt fumes, probably not the best idea, but again never had problems with it.

 

I've done a lot of these. Take a pry bar and tweak the hanger a fuzz.
