It's a tough market, lots of competition.
It always costs twice as much to do it right the second time.
I would suggest saving up for however long it takes to get the kit that you really want....regardless of the brand or where you buy it.

I will agree that customer service from RC was great. I haven't dealt with them in a while though.
I had only purchased an extended rear brake line, some shocks and other misc stuff. Rear SS brake line is still on my heep, and working well. The white rocket shocks are long gone, and I knew what I was essentially paying for. At the time it was cheaper to order the parts from them than it was to buy some potentially crappier off the shelf parts at the local parts store.
For a short time I had a pair of 4.5 RC coils on my heep. They were VERY stiff. Didn't like them. But they never broke.

I've only ever installed two kits before an RE and a Metalcloak kit
Neither were on my own rig, but the quality of the Metalcloak kits was very apparent right out of the box, and the ride is one of the smoothest I've felt both on and off road
you definitely pay for it with the metalcloak, but in my opinion you're definitely getting what you're paying for.
I'm planning on installing their 3.5" ARB kit in the spring

One of the highest quality entry level 3" kits is from Rustys a kit made in NA not China of other places. His full leaf/coil/shock/hardware package is $438 the most important parts of a kit is the leafs and coils that is what you are really paying for. I did research on every kit out there and found none that had everything I wanted or didn't want so this became a no-brainer for me anyway to do at my own pace.
I ran this kit for almost 2 yrs before using it for the base of my 4 1/2" lift. You do not have to have control arms I didn't for some time, but an adj. track bar is required with any 3" lift as a sway bar disconnects or ext's.
Using a base kit like this lets you add quality pieces as you can and not have to throw away junk that came in a cheap kit when the time comes.

I can say RC customer service was amazing, I tend to over extend there shocks alot. each time they replaced them no questions asked, and they even sent me longer ones.

The reason they NOW replace things no questions asked, is because they are CHEAP. Which means they get their stuff from cheap sources. Probably doesn't cost them squat to replace it...so why should they care?
I haven't dealt with them in a long, long, time. And never will again. I don't care how fast they ship, what they replace, who brings the hot dogs to the company BBQ...they suck. They won't get a dime from me or anyone I know. You think I'm the only one with a bad taste in my mouth from these folks? Guess again.
Some have gotten lucky I guess. Some just don't know any better. Some used them, had crap results, and STILL tout them as "a good deal for the money"...
Again, buy quality. CRY ONCE.

I've heard pretty good things
I had one of the first 3 kits they gave out. other than the test kit they had, I think I had the first kit installed on my XJ. the ride is very very nice, very comfortable, and compliant, surefooted. the dual rate sprints are pretty cool too.
Both my brothers have had cherokees at different points, and both have had lift kits installed by a previous owners, and they were uncomfortable, harsh riding on the road, and unpredictable on rough surfaces. I was pretty worried about lifting it, but am so happy with the end results.

And are you still running them? Just curious. BTW if you are over extending shocks, you should measure properly for your application, and bumpstop and limit strap if needed. Just sayin'....

Hey man sounds like you could really benefit from a good set of the proper length shocks for your XJ on a long arm kit. Free isn't worth a damn if it is correct for the app your right.
