When my KM2s wear out I think I'll try the Kevlars. The BFGs were the cheapest of the two at the time.

I'm leaning towards the MTR. They're truer to size than any BFG, so it'll sit taller than my "33" BFG AT, and as long as it rides well on the road I'll be happy. I'm sure it's awesome off-road. I think anything I pick over the BFG AT will be an improvement off-road.

I like them for snow wheeling, because it doesn't take much to get the sidewalls broke in so they'll hold a bead. That also makes the sidewalls a little weak for rockcrawling.

[QUOTE=Big David;3215165]That's exactly what I have but run 12 front & 10 rear on the rocks. They grip great even when wet/muddy. They don't like tree roots. It's like driving on ice.[/QUOTE)

Yeah, I run 10-12 lbs for rocks, but I don't have a low enough crawl ratio so I don't crawl often. I do run about 16 lbs for general trails.

For my DD duties I thought long and hard on the gear driven LSD. People bash them, but I can lock it up with brake work, maybe not as good still as a Detroit, but that's what my front air locker is for. I don't question whether I should have gotten the Detroit over a LSD one bit.

This is a DD and while I would like to have 2 sets of tires/wheels I don't have the money or space to store them.

I WILL trim the fenders. I have already decided what aftermarket flares I'm am going to get, however it will most likely wait until I recoup from this build financially, so maybe a year, maybe before.

SYE is AA. Driveshafts both Tatton's with non-greasable Spicers.

I was waiting for you to chime in, I've read elsewhere that you run 2 sets of tires, and am looking for opinions from people like yourself.

Has there been many instances where that one inch really made a big difference that couldn't be over come with throttle/line chosen/using your head?

I do air down as well, I've gotten my 33x10.5 on V5's down to 8psi no prob, but wheeling in snow.

No detroit here, but I still have a locker in the rear of both my XJs, and there is no 'uneven' tire wear.

I do and have been DD'ing one or the other of them for the last 15 yrs or so, and a 79 ramcharger with a locked rear axle before that.

And there is no way (unless it is broken) for a detroit or any non-selectable locker to 'engage' at highway speeds. If you are moving, it IS engaged, period.

Now, if you were to let off the gas while turning, it will disengage and then re-engage once there is no rpm difference between the tires. if you are turning on a highway @ speed, you won't even be able to tell what it is doing.

I hear about this mythical engaging/disengaging at speed every now & then, but I can tell you, I have been driving locked axle vehicles for well over 25 yrs, and I have never had this happen. The closest is when I intentionally let off the gas and made a hard lane change then got back on it...all that did was give me a clunk when it relocked in, no swerving or any thing that even remotely made me think it was unsafe.

And even if it did, the benefits far outweigh the potential problems people think they will have.

I run a Detroit true track and sometimes it will drag the inside tire turning sharply on throttle aggressively at low speed. With any traction device, its going to have moments on pavement that make you wonder. It seems to me people are blowing small differences from open carriers out of the water as far as negatives. Benefits on the other hand are understated. any traction device will make a world of difference if you have practiced driving in extreme situations or are experienced. I know mine has saved my bacon a few times merging sideways because I misjudged how slick the road is.

My CR is something like 36. Pitiful but but it works for me.
The 8.8 is welded & I have no visible tire wear difference front to rear. I DDed it for 6 months. Never rotated them.
Great tires but if there is a better tire for less money, no brainer.

Just got back from Goodyear. Had them mount an balance the 33x12.5 to my spare wheel, once I had it up next to my jeep I told I'd take them immediately. This thing is a MONSTER! I can understand a quarter inch here or there, but I've been seriously cheated by BFG all these years! Look at the damn photos, the two tires aren't even close!

BFG AT 33x10.5 w/ ~2500-3000mi on them VS brand new Goodyear MTRcK 33x12.5:

With how big and true these are to size, I don't see the need to go to 35's ANYTIME soon. I'll beat on these for a however long they last then reevaluate.

I have the other 4 coming in tomorrow to get mounted/balanced. Being the haggler I am, after rebates and free installation and me getting the younger service manager to go down lower than he should have, $1100 out the door for FIVE MTRcK!

Mounted spare:

Nice tires and a good choice for you, your current 4.88 gears will be very good off road for sure.........But I do see more trimming for you to get full use of your lift and those tires.

When I bought those cheap 33x12:50's for mine I paid just under $700 for 5 of them on sale mounted, balanced, new stems. On my steel wheels I run the pressure at 15# or so to be safe the beadlocks can go much lower when needed. Keep your eye out for a good portable air compressor like a Viar for off road use.

I agree on the gears. With the weight of that spare already in my tire carrier I feel like 4.56 would not have been enough. Driving around town I've already notice how the weight affected everything. Glad I went 4.88, if not for 35's then for the weight of what I'll be carrying.

Yes I agree as well on the trimming. With these things the same size as another brands 35" I will be trimming when it warms up a little. Until then just try not to flex it at all.

And I didn't want the headache of dealing with a compressor; air lines, electrical lines, where to mount(too ocd to be satisfied with any option I was considering), and then the tank. I opted for a 10lb co2 tank that I use for airing up. Also for air tools on the trail if my battery impact ever dies.

With a full 10lb tank I got:

-4 BFG 33x10.5 aired up from 8 to 33psi
-4 BFG 31x10.5 aired up from 15-33psi
-1 whole d30 stripped using HF impact; ball joints, CA's, everything.
-aaand half of another axle stripped before I ran out haha.

I was impressed with it.

I also carry a spare air tank but my compressor is a portable unit I bought it as a kit complete with 20' coiled hose, air chucks, carry case and misc. other small items that came with it. It hooks to the battery using clip-on like you see on a battery charger 10' long or so.

Only bad part about it is everyone wants to use or borrow it and we all know what happens then.
