A guy told me today that stock shocks off a new JK fit perfect on a XJ with a 3" lift. Has anyone else heard of this or running this setup? There are tons of take off new JK shocks on craigslist cheap.

Only done it 4 times.

Gotta change some stuff on the ends. All you need is a vise and silicone spray.

Well the way it connects in the rear, to the body of your jeep is the same it has the ball pin, I'm running ball pin eliminates so I pressed out the ball pin and put them in I ran them when I still had a 3 inch lift. I'm not sure what the other poster was referring to that or the bottom because at the bottom there is also a metal sleeve, in the bushing it may need to be pressed out? I have different shock perches perches. They do work and well! Basically the way it goes is you measure from the bump stop to the coil buckets in the front and from the bump stop to the leaf spring in the back and that will tell you how much travel your shock needs to have.

They fit perfect for 3" lift.......Iv used them several times also. Check with your local Jeep lift shop, customers leave them there all the time not realizing they can sell them. Good luck.

Ran them on my 2.5 lift and they were excellent. I picked up another set of run on my next jeep project with 3.5 lift.

You will have everything you need between your old shocks and new shocks.

I got a set just like that along with all the control arms, swaybar links, coils and 5 17" wheels and tires.

I believe you just need to make sure they are the RED in color Rubicon Dampers.


I don't think the black ones are much of an upgrade. Someone correct me if I am wrong.


I picked up a set of 4 Rubicon Shocks (RED) with 200 miles on em for $50. The fronts you need to press out the metal sleeves and then press in the bar pins from your stock shocks. The rears you just need to press out the metal sleeves and install.


I thought it was a huge upgrade from my existing shocks, which were not the stock ones. Coupled with my stiffer suspension, the jeep rides great now. The monotube design on the rubicon shocks is far superior than half the **** on the market for us XJ guys. At a 3" lift these things are perfect.


EDIT: Use WD40 to spray inside the sleeves and bar pins to remove them when pressing them out. And use some heavy duty grease to press the bar pins into lower front shock bushings

The blacks would get you the length, but you are right that they are not particularly great. The rubicons shocks are valved slightly better.

I recently got to compare a rear set of JK rubicon shocks to my monotube shocks from Rubicon Express. The RE shocks are listed as good for a 3.5 to 4.5 inch lift.

The JK shocks are slightly shorter fully extended then the RE shocks. The RE shocks compress slightly easier then the JK shocks.

JK Shock is 23.25" extended, 15" collapsed according to some quick googling.

Just do it and quit overthinking it. I've done 5 swaps of JK shocks to XJs. Works great.
