I'm going to be lifting my xj to about 4.5" within the next few months, so im looking into SYE (242 t-case.) Im thinking about getting the Iron Rock Off road Hack n Tap kit (http://ironrockoffroad.com/Merchant2...egory_Code=XDT)
But , correct me if im wrong, it seems like i could just pick up a stock yoke from pick n pull and cut it down to get the same product for a lot less money.
The IRO kit is very affordable, but if i have the option of doing the work myself i like to do that.
Is there any advantage to buying the kit, other than time saved.
I used the IRO SYE kit on my Jeep. I don't see why you couldnt make your own, if you could find the proper yoke. The IRO drill guide is really nice though just helps the bit be 100% centered.
the advantage is its all figured out & just shows up to your door nice & new ready to install, get the drill guide its worth it.also the cost involved to do a 4.5 " lift correctly , the $100 for the iro h&t is peanuts. there will be lots of factors to deal with that all cost money to get right.
It is expensive to go 4.5". Which is why im not buying a pre-fabed lift kit either, ready to install is nice, but if i dont have to pay for convenience, id rather not.
I just wasn't sure if the Kit brought anything to the table other than convenience.
This is strictly my wheeling rig so if it takes some time getting things together, its no big deal.

From what ive read, i think the Hack n Tap is the only way to do the old 242 transfer case.
That write up helped alot, if im going to have to buy the yoke from a 63-64 corvette, ill probably just go with the IRO kit. The Corvette yoke is nearly the same price.

Correct. Best price I have seen is $80 plus shipping. I just went with Iron Rock as well.
I also suggest getting the 'drill jig' and the drill bits and tap.
The fun part is cutting the output shaft with engine running and in reverse!
Thanks Dumajones for the helpful videos. It always helps to see it done before doing it yourself.
Only thing is, they cheated and removed the case. Part of the fun is a full assault of showering sparks bouncing off the tranny tunnel when cutting!
