Default i have an 8.25 axle opportunity

Well ive searched all the forums and couldnt find my specific question. I have an opportunity to swap my Dana 35 to a Chrysler 8.25 for free. I figure i cant pass up the deal but im not sure about driveshaft lengths.

My DD xj is a 97 4.0 aw4 242 tcase. his is a 01 4.0 aw4 2wd. from what i gather we should both have 3.55 gears (gunna check for tags)

Ive read

i need to buy new u bolts (3 inch)
ujoint are the same
the spring plates should be the same
only issue is maybe the driveshaft length??
I dont have a lift but a 3 inch will be going in within 3 months

if you could offer any help that would be great.

Shaft for an 8.25 is going to be shorter than a 35.

Best bet is a junk yard or for a couple hundred you could have a nice one built. Tom Woods comes to mind.

8.25 XJ's are all over the yards though if you are looking to go cheaper.

Yes both gear ratios would be the same. I'm not sure how long the driveshaft is from the 2wd donor jeep big why don't u just take the driveshaft just in case?

Keep the d35 driveshaft. U may need it when u lift it.

Yeah I could keep it. The guy just wants to keep the donor jeep rollable. I will also give the junkyard a visit. Hopefully they have an 4wd xj with a 8.25

if you pull a 8.25 from the junkyard. Make sure it's a 29 spline

All 97+ should be 29 spline correct? Am I correct in saying that any year 4wd xj with 8.25 axle should have the same driveshaft length right?

If you have ABS, you'll have to address that also.

The abs was giving me issues since I bought it a few months ago till I seen a post on here about deleting the abs via the fuses and relays. Haven't had an issue since and stops quicker to.

You say a lift is going on soon, so my suggestion is that you get the axle, build it (disc brakes, relocated shock mounts, locker or limited slip, differential cover and paint it nice. Then when you put the lift on swap it in

That would be great but I have to actually swap mine out with his. He needs my d35 to keep his jeep rolling.

sorry to revive an old thread but i went to the junk yard today to look for an 8.25 and found a few. my question is the other jeeps are 231 t-case's and mine is a 242. From the previous posts above if i take the 8.25 and DS from donor jeep with 231 t-case will it all jive with my 242?

edit: nvm what i said earlier

from what i understand the 242 is a bit bigger, so the driveshaft length will be slightly different. your best bet is to get a measuring tape and figure out the length you need, and compare see at the junkyard which is closest to what you need. from what i understand you will need a longer driveshaft to use with the 8.25, so ideally you would want the driveshaft from a np242 with a 8.25 because that is probably the longest possible combo.
