Default HPD30 27spline vs. 35's and detroit

do I need a HPD30 30 spline upgrade kit to run 35's?
I really cant afford the kit. but I really want 35's and 4.88's with a detroit
how easy will 35's and a locker break stock driveshafts?

33/12.50/R15 4.56 gears detroit 27 locker

or

35/12.50/R15 4.88 gears detroit 30 locker and upgraded 30 spline shafts

you typically have to worry about breaking u-joints/axle shafts rather then drive shafts. with that said, i have broken numerous 297 joints with my skinny 33s and lunchbox locker.

I dont plan on hitting the hardest lines. I just want an adventure rig

I'd love to do that too. buy yeah 900 aint happening
I wish it was an upgrade I could do later because I'm sure I would
but then I'd have to buy another lunchbox. then I'm in it over $1400 for 3 added splines...
and I dont really know. if OX isnt selectible then yeah they make it

but no one has really answered my question. I know I SHOULD buy a shaft upgrade kit for 35's
but is it WORTH the price for 3 added splines

thanks. I havent made my decision yet. just working out my options and more importantly, a budget
I have no problem starting out on 33's
I do have a problem with selcting gear ratio. because if I go 33 I want 4.56 and I do not want to regear twice for 35's
I know it's not that much of a difference. still researching
I appreciate the input tho

not worth the money. i have been rollin on 35's and a detroit for about 3 years now. i ran the smaller 260x u-joints for 2 years of that. i now run 297x joints on stock shafts. the reason i do this is cause i have never broken a shaft (busted a couple u-joints when runnin the 260 joints) on my 35's. best part about runnin 27 spline shafts (even chromo's) is that you can carry stock spares and pick them up for dirt cheap! if you snap a 30 spline then good luck finding a spare on the trail or at local junk yard.

i roll on 4.56 gears on 35's but i have a 5 speed

thanks for sharing your experience with them
I think I want to just start with 33's though. with 4.88's on AW4
any idea how many rps's I'll be turning at 65 mph?
and what rpms with 33's on 4.56?
I dont trust the ratio calculator because I've gotten different numbers from other charts etc.

The material will make up the difference more than three splines. I ran 35s with a stock 30 and 456 gears. Never hurt u joints or shafts I did break the ring gear tho. Before I upgraded shafts I opted to go with a waggy 44. Great for running 35s.
In the end tho it all comes down to the golden rule... ITS ALL ABOUT HOW YOU DRIVE IT

I know.with 456s I was running what you would run when your stock. I believe you'll run 600 rpms more with 33s and 488s. You gain roughly 300 rpms for every gear count you jump as in going from 410s to 456s you gain about 300 rpms

thats a good rule. I just want an adventure rig that doesnt have to bypass too much
closest places to me are Rubicon and Fordyce Creek. so thats what capability I'm looking for
