Default How to make / install a hand throttle for manual transmission

I got sick of having a hard time climbing obstacles going up a hill. There are some times where you need a third foot and this is where having a hand throttle makes things much easier. I made this for about 25 bucks give or take.

First you need your parts..

I picked up everything from ebay.

BMX brake two finger brake lever... 9 bucks shipped
10' cable housing... 7 bucks shipped
tandem bike brake cable ... 5 bucks
pvc bushing ... 1 buck
the little ends for the cable ... 1 buck
Barrel adjuster for a brake lever 1 buck

Misc crimp and clip free had them laying around.

First you want to fish your cable housing through the boot and along the foot well and make your way to where the cable for the hood release pops through the firewall. Fish the housing through the grommet and pull the excess into the fire wall.

Once it is in the engine bay you want to drill your hole for the barrel adjuster in between the two cables next to the throttle body.

You want to trim the housing to the length you need and slide the cable in the housing to see if its long enough. I used about 8' of housing my cable stuck out about 6-8" after trimming. Pull the cable out and place your ends on the cable housing to keep it nice. Slide the cable into the housing and use anything you have handy an electrical connector or what i used was a fishing line snap swivel.

Button everything up and install your lever on the shifter. I used a bushing from some pvc fittings to make up the difference in diameters. The shifter is around 1/2" and the lever is meant for 7/8's.

When your all said and done you will have your "Third foot" in the form of a hand.

The location where it is its really easy and convenient to grab with your pointer finger and super easy to pull. I have found I use it more than i thought even on normal driving. It comes in handy to rev match while braking and downshifting.

Good luck and have more control when climbing stuff up hill with a stick.

Cool write up!!! Ive been thinking about doing this soon and didnt know it would be that cheap. I have a thought, what if you had one that you could lock into position so a pseudo cruise control?

Using it as a cruise control is an Exteremly bad idea.

Why? As I see it, it is very similar to the way stock cruise works. Gets speed input and sets the throttle to hold that speed. In snow, stock cruise will spin you around because its trying to hold that certain speed. Instead of the computer and vacuum to set cruise, you are with the handle throttle. One down side is tapping the break wont turn it off

Simple.
With a proper cruise control system the PCM will kill the cruise system as soon as you touch the brake pedal. In an emergency situation that's exactly what you want. Imagine stomping on the brakes as your driving down the road, cars all around, and you have your hands full avoiding a potential accident. The last thing you need is to have to remember to disengage your "Cruise Control" before the engine starts bouncing off the rev limiter and blows itself up.

I have seen these made with choke handles, and gear selector levers from bikes.... Only down side to it being a brake lever... it auto returns so you have to hold pressure. IN some extreme cases that is not practical... especailly when you are way off chamber and need to brace for a roll

Awesome write up. Get some more clear pics, maybe we can add it to the write up section.

As for the cruise control idea...here is some fuel for the fire....

Motorcycles have cruise available to them. Mechanical cruise that doesn't have any brain or computer to operate it. Just the rider.

If they can make it work, it can be done with this.

Motorcycles are a completely differant animal.

If you want cruise control this simply isn't a smart move. I sell hand throttles so I'm all for using them.....for their intended purpose though.

Please think long and hard before using something like this for anything other than offroad use only.

Yeah, don't try and re-engineer something. Even if you try and do it safely.
