I'm pulling an extra set of springs from the JY to test out various heights for the front.. and if I find a ZJ with rear discs I'm definitely planning on doing the conversion...all in all you say it handles well with your setup so I'll pretty much follow in your foot steps.
Actually what would be the difference between a ZJ rear axle and an XJ? Is the width slightly different? Will the drive shaft bolt up? I've seen the conversion but always wondered if it could be a direct swap. Anyways I'll keep the questions coming and progress updated.
I assume your 8.25 is an open diff and 3.55 gears? Probably the single biggest performance improvement we noticed was due to the LSD (with the stiffer rear leafs, it had a tendency to spin inside tires in corners a lot more) and deeper gears we got with the 8.8. It would cost far more to add those to your 8.25 than just swap it out. You get a stronger axle and disc brakes out of the bargain too.
I can find 8.8's for ~$300 out here with LSD's and either 3.73 or (ideally) 4.10 gears. You're going to have to do just as much work to make the 8.25 sprung under, and you can probably sell it to somebody with a D35 in his XJ for ~$100 pretty easily. Worth every penny to upgrade, IMHO (I spent a lot of time debating this in my head).
One more thing, keep us updated on the shifter. I'm very interested because I don't use OD that much unless I'm on the highway. Seems to conserve gas as the engine is more free instead of being forced to accel.
Wheels selection is great i planned on running the Black Rock series steelies similar to the cragar, 16x8 sounds good in size relative to tire selections.. I would like to have A/t tires just in case i plan on dirt racing a bit. Again this is more of a daily driver than a racer, until engine modifications come into play. Also its the family vehicle..lol

As to the wheels, I'd buy 'em from Allied/Raceline. They're huge supporters of the offroad racing scene, land use efforts, and one of my sponsors too.

Just thought I'd post a reference picture of the Jeep sitting on level ground to show the ride height. Keep in mind with flares on, it would look a bunch lower:

Cool picture of our pits from Buttonwillow. We brought out the now semi-retired King of the Hammers Cherokee (www.teamnaxja.org) based buggy to show just how versitile the XJ platform is:

As a fan of manual transmissions, I was kinda bummed that all I could find were automatics when I was searching for the rig initially. I kept running into the same thing; every XJ that was cheap enough (under $500) was older, and would have come with the abysmal, horrible, POS Peugeot BA10/5. If I could have found a 91+ with an AX-15, I probably would have gone that route, but now I'm actually rather glad I ended up with the slushbox. When you're driving at the limit for hours on end in heavy race traffic, not having to worry about heel-toeing every downshift is nice.
Still, it does feel a little like cheating.

Swaps can be done relatively cheap, and as long as you drive it right your times will improve.
Just my 2 cents...

I'm a big fan of the 24 Hours of LeMons, and I love that you're running an XJ in it! I know Car and Driver covers, and competes, in the event each year. Have you been able to talk with them at all, get your XJ published?

Sick build man. 24 hours of LeMons is my favorite road-racing event ever. Already "liked" on facebook. Wanna bring it to NC so I can drive it?

Ive read a lot fo your posts on NAXJA, and am very glad to see you over here with all the detailed information. I know my cousin has a lowered 2wd XJ, and him and his brother are buidling a stroked and possible turbo MJ setup for SCCA/autoX racing. Id love to find a 2wd cherokee to lower a bit and use as a DD. Thanks again for posting up all this info!

Also, thanks for all the positive comments guys! I just noticed that not a lot of people visit the Advanced Tech section...should I build another thread in Cherokee Chat or Off-Topic about the team in general with more pics and info about the overall event?

the advanced tech section is fairly new, as it was pulled apart from the standard "cherokee tech". with all teh tech information i think its very good in the section, but i think it could fit in the chat section as well with all the general info and team info you have. Id ask a mod just to double check what they think.
