As for the tranny, the AW4 is an extremely tough and reliable unit so it will be staying, but we are currently testing out a prototype road/track oriented AW4 controller for RADesigns: clicky

Why? It's an extremely stout transmission; I've heard anecdotal chatter about Supra guys running huge horsepower (like 700+) numbers with minor mods. I did install a huge tranny cooler to make sure things didn't get too hot.
As a fan of manual transmissions, I was kinda bummed that all I could find were automatics when I was searching for the rig initially. I kept running into the same thing; every XJ that was cheap enough (under $500) was older, and would have come with the abysmal, horrible, POS Peugeot BA10/5. If I could have found a 91+ with an AX-15, I probably would have gone that route, but now I'm actually rather glad I ended up with the slushbox. When you're driving at the limit for hours on end in heavy race traffic, not having to worry about heel-toeing every downshift is nice.
Still, it does feel a little like cheating.

Very well may have seen it on a NAXJA link. Put a shoe either on the Jeep or in front of a trophy, take a picture. and you'll have my full attention.
I just hate trolls, lmao. And admit, this is so cool, anyone here would lay claim to it if they could.

Thanks for all the info, as soon as i have the time and a garage to tackle this project i will keep updates about it. I was thinking in just getting all new suspension mounts..
Anyways thank you very much, you have given me more inspiration to build this project as DD and racer.. Any jeep guy knows these things are quick but for the unknown they wont know what hit em..
Im going to use my 8.25 chry so i was already figuring the 5-6" drop in rear and instead of add-a-leaf i was thinking shackles to bring it up a lil??. im pulling a extra set of springs from the JY to test out various heights for the front.. and if i find a zj with rear discs im def plan on doing the conversion.. all in all you say it handles well with your setup so ill pretty much follow in your foot steps..
Actually what would be the difference between a zj rear end and an xj?? Is the width slightly different? will the drive shaft bolt up? Ive seen the conversion but always wondered if it could be a direct swap. Anyways ill keep the Q's coming and progress updated.
One more things keep us updated on the shifter.. im very interested cuz i dont use OD that much unless im on the highway.. Seems to conserve gas as the engine is more free instead of being forced to accel.
Wheels selection is great i planned on running the Black Rock series steelies similar to the cragar, 16x8 sounds good in size relative to tire selections.. I would like to have A/t tires just in case i plan on dirt racing a bit. Again this is more of a daily driver than a racer, until engine modifications come into play. Also its the family vehicle..lol

Yeah, The Archer brothers raced 4-cylinder MJ's in the late 80's in SCCA Sport Truck, even won a couple championships. I mentioned notching the front axle in my original text, and that's exactly what they did to get the camber in the front axle and clear the oil pan of the 'Manches they raced. Tommy Archer later went on to become better known for racing Vipers (and winning a lot) in the 90's.

"Well im glad to here someone is still active with the old jeeps. they were the stock axles that we slightly modified to get more camber in them. and we ran with bilstein shocks and custom eibach springs. and also custom fiberglass rear leif springs.
Thanks again
John Archer"

The race car is at Petty Cash World Headquarters, so I put the trophy and one of my racing shoes on the hood of my big-boy XJ:
