Default how high?

Ok so I'm asking myself the same question a lot have before. How high should I lift my xj? I have a 98 sport with a 3" lift and 31s. I want to go higher (not surprising). So do I go with 4.5" or just say the hell with it and go straight to 6.5" of lift? Its my dd and weekend offroad toy. So what are your thoughts fellas?

There are a lot more costs involved with going to 6.5" vs 4.5". However, you might want to ask yourself why you want to go so high. Is it for looks or performance? Are you climbing over Pinto sized rocks or mud bogging? What size tires are you hoping to run? Do you plan on regearing to accommodate the larger tires? Can you afford the additional costs associated with going to 6.5"?

For a DD I would go with 4.5".
6.5" will cost you a lot more time and money. Once you start the project, there will be one thing after another that you'll have to fix/upgrade, thus more down-time for your DD. It may be a bigger can of worms than you're prepared to eat.

I like em low myself as well. I've also stopped building for lift amount ___ and care more about travel and a belly pan clearance.

I have a 5.5 and I'd be more than happy with a 4.5 LA kit with some KM2 33s or 35's'. Anything over that really isn't necessary for most XJ's. Plus I'd rather keep the center of gravity lower.

Pick your tires first then build around them.

Ya I would stay away from the 6.5 Its what I have the road manners suck, gets to be scary as hell when your in off camber situations, ( turns in to a 2Wheeler all the time). I'm dropping it Once I cut the fenders and get tj flares on it

i like the 5.5" lift. If you get long arms it really is fine on the road (depending on the lift) the lift works great and looks great with 33's and if you want 35's it isnt to much trimming. i would post a picture but im not sure how haha sorry.

Well I do quite a bit of mud bogging as well as water crossings where I go offroading. I want to run a 33" tire but like I said its a dd so I don't want a lot of down time. I also thought maybe a spacer and new shackles. That will put me near 5" of lift. I also don't wanna kill the ride

Tall is overrated, at least for rocks. Some of the most capable rigs I have seen are all low COG, 6.5" lift on 39s and so on. Armor the bottom, bump stop, cut up the body, low and wide is stable.

You don't need 5" lift to run 33's. I am running a 3.5" lift and 33's on my Xj. With minor trimming and extended bump stops. Mine rides great and is extremely capable it actually surprises people where I go. .
