So I purchased a 94 Cherokee about a year ago and the speedometer never worked. According to the guy I purchased it from he said that he replaced the transfer case with a better one and that I needed a new gear for the speedometer to work.
How do I go about finding out what transfer case was installed to find the correct speedometer gear I would need so it starts working again?
I have no contact infor with the previous owner now so I can ask him what it was he installed. Everything is still stock (wheels, tires, lift)
Thanks everyone!

you've most likely got either a 231 or 242. does it have part time and full time options?
you will probably need a long shaft 31 spline (if i recall). you can get one from the dealer, but for probably 25 bux.
or go to the wrecker and pull one from a case. either 231 or 242 should have the same gear.
it's easy, just remove the bolt/finger and pull the speedo cable housing out. the gear is under there and just pulls out to remove it.

or just simply use a gps, it's more accurate anyways.
if you have larger tires, you'll need to find a chart and order the correct speedo gear from the dealer.
there are many charts on the interweb.

I use a great app for my android phone called speed view...... Uses gps and is very acurate, my 32's make the xj speedometer off by about 7 to 10 mph. If you have an android phone buy a mount for it and dload speed view, its free.
