For my hood vents I used an old battery charger housing. The charger was fried and taking up space in the garage so I cannibalized it for the vents. I placed my in that area because it was the hottest part of the hood in summer after pulling a trailer and seeing the temp get up to 240 F. I used a saws all and taped over the area before making my cuts. I repainted the vents using military grade black paint from here at work and pop-riveted them to the hood.
That's an intake hood, meant to force air into the engine. The holes are supposed to be attached to a duct system that channels air to the throttle body.
If you use that as a vent hood instead, it will vent heat in traffic and while wheeling, but you'll be decreasing your cooling efficiency on the highway. You want air to flow through the radiator and out from the engine bay. That means the holes in the vent should face the other directly to create suction rather than back pressure.
I bought a set of really cool Z24 hood vents but never put them on because they just seem too big. The heat really doesn't need a large opening to escape. The problem with most of these hood vents is that they either look slapped on or dominate the appearance of the hood.
But recently I saw this M715 for sale on Craigslist:
I don't particularly like the large holes in the flat part of the fender, but I'm intrigued by what they did along the ridge. The XJ has ridges like that a little further toward the edges of the hood. I'm wondering how it would function and look with a short row of small holes in the ridge dressed out with some sort of body-colored grommet, so that they wouldn't be very noticeable until you get close.
Went on a ride along with a buddy and saw these. I forgot where he said he got these but I lie the way they look.
lol.... What I think of when you say "ride along"
So I was kinda confused when I saw pics of XJ hood vents. Took me a second to realize you were "riding" "along with" your buddy... not doing a ride-along.

Side note: Sixteen years ago I was still working in teevee news and was covering a big forest fire in Oklahoma. The forestry PIO took us out to a staging area that was quite close to the fire, and along one side of the clearing was a wall of smoke. As I was getting my gear out of the truck, I heard this sound behind me and turned just in time to see an M715 outfitted with a water tank come roaring up out of the brush, the two guys inside grinning ear to ear.
I've got a '71 Gladiator to hold me over until I have room to take on a big project, but I'd really like to have an M715 to drive around town and scare the **** out of rude people in traffic.

That's an awesome story man. Those are the kinds of stories you'll never hear from someone in regard to a kia (or enter XXX modern day vehicle here).
