Hood Lift Mod - Long vs Short Struts?
Looking at doing a hood lift strut mod. A couple of questions come up.
The short strut kit looks better in that it is less in the way etc.

But does the raising and lowering of the hood create a stress area on the hood that leads to cracking or bending? With the strut work being done so near the hinge, I can see this possibly happening. Any reports from the field?
The long strut mod can be made from liftgate parts and easily fabbed brackets. Not a bad project. And can be done really cheap. But a bit more in the way.

Any comments from experience between the two?

^ the orientation is what separates them. The first is what you want. I'm just surprised they didn't attach it to the hinge. That's how I did mine.

Thanks so much. I really think this would be a fun project. Simple. Inexpensive. High utility value. I am always amazed at the collective ingenuity of this forum.

On close inspection under my hood, I think the strut ball needs to be positioned outboard about an inch from the hinge to keep the collapsed strut from tangling with the ABS pump and plumbing when the hood is lowered. I noted that you don't have the ABS mess. Maybe that is why the short strut kit is the way it is. I think I can easily get the strut ball moved outboard by using a coupling nut as a spacer between the ball and the hinge.

I did mine with old 98 struts. Total cost was $2.00 for the brackets from JY.
It is never in my way and less stress on hood then the prop.
One of the best mods you can do.

$70 for a hood lift kit is a bit much for a jeep. I have a set of old hatch struts I have been meaning to do this with. Was going to use the method seen here:

Using these mounting plates:
