Hey folks I am rebuilding my D30 and D35 and I am looking for recommendations on what LSD i should go with in the rear and what selectable locker for the front ?
I plan I putting Chromoly shafts in both axles and am going with a 4.5 Long arm lift with 33's
Thanks guys

I am sure someone will disagree with me, but I would not use a selectable locker in the D30. It will break those 27 spline shafts. You can get away with it if you use 30 spline. However the locker will do the most good in the rear. I have locked a D35 for years, but I have non C clip axles which makes a lot of difference. But even with 30 spline Detroit Super Dana 44, the housing isn't up to it if you are using C clips

So even with the upgrade axle shafts ur saying it won't work ? There is a way to change from 27 spline to 30?Originally Posted by 4.3L XJ

Seriously, the thing to do is replace that D35 with either a 29 spline 8.25 or Ford 8.8 and then lock it. But here is the thing. There is a reason Jeep went with D44s front and rear with two selectable lockers. The increased stress of having four wheels turn at the same speed in changing traction and in turns on hard surfaces puts too much force on the drive train components. I realize you live in the north country and you must see some snow and ice. But you have to have a stronger rear end at a minimum for a selectable locker. Upgrading to 30 splines can be done with an auto locker, not sure about a selectable, but the D35 housing is weak and flexes causing the axle shafts to fail

Ok wasn't planning on replacing the axles just the shafts I won't be really wheeling it much but thanks for the info I appreciate itOriginally Posted by 4.3L XJ

I run a Truetrac LSD in the rear (8.25) and a 30-spline ARB in the front (HP30). I'm running 4.56s, 33s and a stick shift (ax15). It's amazing! I wheel the rig but also drive it all over the place. The Truetrac is seriously glorious - I used to run lunchbox lockers front and rear and it was a pain to drive around but really capable off road. With my new setup, I don't think I really lost any capability off road that couldn't be overcome with the winch. It's the road where everything really improved.
The ARB is great - it's responsive and locks and unlocks quickly - but it's complicated and expensive. You'll have to have onboard air and switch gear. I also keep spare air lines with me just in case. While I haven't had any issues with it yet (knock on wood), if I was to do it again, I'd probably run an OX mechanical locker for the front and just deal with the difficulty of mounting a shifter.

big tires require regearing, keep that in mind.
I have 33 tires, D30 in front with 30 spline and manual hubs, i.e. the disconnector is eliminated, so the long side axle is now one piece. I got an arb air locker in front.
I have a Ford 9 inch in rear, disc brake, and an Eaton trutrac.
My logic is a selectable locker in front, turn it on when needed wheeling, An auto locker or limited slip in front can from what I understand cause goofy handling if it turns on and off when you dont expect it. However an autolocker or limited slip in rear is not going to give the handling issues when it operates, if you hit ice on one rear wheel, it will lock then unlock once traction is regained, pretty nice.
Anyway that is my logic, flawed as it maybe.
PS you will want an air compressor even if you dont get an airlocker, as the biggest help off road is to deflate the tires. but you will need to fill them tires back up for the hiway. about 12 psi for off road, 30 psi on hiway for me is typical.

Thanks for the info buddy appreciate it !
Don't waste any money on the Dana 35 swap to an 8.25 axle. I have Spartan lockers in both axles and they work great with 35s, I have never broken anything. If you wan't a limited slip a Truetrac is what I reccomend.

So i have a dana 35 lincoln locked laying behind my shop. I never broke it running 33s on the dirt and pavement.
Id venture to guess that there actually arent many who have experience breaking the weak dana35.
If i daily drove 70% of the time and trails 30 i think id run damn near any locker in the 35 and any locker in the 30 id steer clear of selectable stuff.
If i thought I was going to get into technical trails id continue running the 35 with welded carrier while i put together a 8.25 with 4.88s.
then id put the 8.25 thinking its bullet proof but find 27spl shafts break pretty easy spinning 33s in the rocks. Then id swap to 29 spline weld carrier.
Wait thats what i did. Never did break my 35 but i didnt abuse it like i have the 8.25
So whos broke theyre 35.
