Hi all,
I decided to upgrade the headlight harness in my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport.
For the most part, these are the directions I followed: http://jeep-xj.info/HowtoHeadlightLoom.htm
My issue is the headlights are on, even when the switch inside isn't pulled to the on position. When I pull the switch out to where the headlights would normally turn on with the factory harness, they shut off with the new harness.
The following describes the connections I have made:
-Red fused wires connected to the positive battery terminal
-Black headlight ground wires connected to the negative battery terminal
-Relay ground wires connected to a radiator support bolt
-High- and low-beam jumper wires connected to the factor headlight socket on the left side of the vehicle (as viewed from the front)
This is the type of relay I bought:
http://www.amazon.com/Parts-Express-Waterproof-Relay-Bracket/dp/B000PHLQJW/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1396277548&sr=8-5&keywords=5+pin+relay
Any ideas on where I messed up?
Thanks,
Bronson

If you look at the schematic for the two relays, you will see they aren't the same.
Yours has a normally on and a normally off contact while the one in the article has two normally off contacts.
I suspect you have connected to pin 87 and need to move that connection to 87a.

That makes sense! Since I'm only using 2 relays and not 4, I'll snag some of the correct kind and let you know how it goes.
Thank you very much,

I already had the wiring set up to use all 5 pins on the relay. Yes, I could have just used it like a 4 pin relay by crimping two wires into a female spade and putting it on one of the 87 pins, but going the route I did made it more of an adventure
Your suggestion would have saved me some money, though. The original relays I purchased were about $3.50 each. The NAPA AR274 relays cost nearly $20 each. If anyone else finds themselves in the same situation I did but you're strapped for cash, use sreeb's method.
Cheers,
Bronson
