Just plain old DONT DO IT! It's a very bad idea. it'll ride so bad on the road that you very well might break your back from jarring it so hard on the bumps, there will be no flex because the xj don't weigh enough, you'll have a he'll of a time putting it on. take my word for it. just dont.

. the rear leafs will be pretty stiff as well but that wont affect ride as terrible. you will need a shackle relocation kit and to cut the backs out of the fenders about 4" IIRC to use the bronco leafs.

your uncles trucks empty weight is more than the max payload of a cherokee i am not exaggerating. my buddy runs F150 (same as bronco) TTB coils in his ranger TTB (heavier than an XJ) and his rides like a dump truck with the sway bar disco'd.

yeah, i wouldn't bother. after all the hard work, you will not be happy with it.
if it has a 9 inch rear, which i don't think it would, prolly an 8.8, but if it's a 9, you could use that, weld on some 2.5 inch perches in the correct spot for your cherokee leafs, weld on some shock mounts as per cherokee, and worry about the yoke and brake lines at that point as it's easy to deal with (1310/1350 u-joint).
then get yourself either an f250 d44 that was set up for leafs, and weld on some coil buckets/lower control arm mounts in the correct spot, then deal with the steering links and brake lines at that point also. very easy to do.
this way, you're way further ahead of where you would be if you were to tackle the TTB 44/8.8 combo.
use cherokee coils and leafs. a ford full width with weld on buckets will net you a couple of inches over stock axles anyways. so a 4.5 inch cherokee coil should get you about 6.5 inches in the real world when all is said and done.

ford axles are plenty strong. just gotta do some research to understand the differences.
chev front axles are nice if you run a d300.
