good aftermarket cam to get?

This mild cam will idle smoothly and starts making more power from 1800 rpm to shift point 4850. 5-10hp throughout most rpm and +15 more torque throughout most rpm.
Yep a bored TB will give more power, 3-4 hp and extend rpm range.
Even a TB spacer adds 2-3 hp.
1.7:1 roller rockers will add 5-6hp and 10TQ and extend power beyond 4000 up to 4700rpm.
All the 'bolt-ons' you can think of will only add 15hp and 20tq max rear wheel numbers from stock.
Real power comes from Forced Induction. Even 5-6 pounds of boost will add +60hp and +70tq at the rear wheels.

I'm planning on building a motor outside of the car and I have been debating a cam anyway. I'm pulling a 96 motor just like the one I have in my XJ now. So I was thinking about getting a cam and doing it all before I install the motor.

I've used Yella Terra 1.7:1 and also used Harland Sharp 1.6:1 and had them make me 2 sets of 1.7:1.
The stock cam is waay anemic and low performance. Good for longevity and torque.
You can use stock valve springs with the 1.7s and stock cam.
Instead of a stock engine running out of steam at 3800-4000 rpm, 1.7:1 roller rockers + 62mm TB and aftermarket headers and 2.5" cat back will give more power and allow it to rev to 4800 rpm without wheezing.
