To do it properly yes. While your buddies haven't had an issue I guarantee the people driving towards them are likely ticked off every time they pass them. I'm sorry you were misinformed that HID's can be used in a halogen housing but they really shouldn't be used in that manner. You need a set of TRUE projectors to property harness the light output from HID's. The 'projectors' sold on ebay are not for HID's as they are a reflector style unit and not a true projector.

Here's an old writeup I did that is far from complete but gives you a good background on where you should go next.

HID’s the Smart Way

First off: No matter what the package or seller or website say, ALL HID KITS are ILLEGAL to install in a vehicle that did not come from the factory with HID headlamps under federal law (FMVSS No. 108 Section S7.7).

If you choose to install HID’s anyway read on.

There are some common mistakes made by people that put HID’s into vehicles that did not originally come with them.

1) In a replaceable bulb system (think ZJ not XJ) people merely pull the old bulb and put in the HID bulb.

2) In a sealed bulb system (XJ’s) people get cheap “projectors” off of ebay which are nothing more than a reflector lens with a ring around the bulb that is supposed to simulate a projector and place an HID bulb in them.

3) People get halogen housings (ecodes and the like) and place HID’s into them.

All of the above mistakes lead to light being scattered everywhere which blinds oncoming drivers and attracts police attention.

The correct way to put HID’s into a vehicle that does not originally come with them is to place the bulbs into a true projector housing.

True projectors are expensive http://www.futurevisionhid.com/h6054-200mm-hid-projector-headlight.html

A solution to this problem is to retrofit projectors into a standard 6054 housing allowing you to have a safer HID kit that won’t blind oncoming drivers https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f58/he...9/#post1391556

There’s a lot of HID specific issues to address but this is a basic writeup and is meant to inform about legality and the proper way to install these lights.

Thanks for that. I was about to ask about the eBay "projector" housings. Since I can't and don't really want to drop $500 for my headlights, what do I do? While the eBay projectors aren't the best option, are they better than say an IPF housing, or are they all bad? Is there something I can do now to get me better headlights while I save up for projectors later on?

Edit: I apologize, I didn't see that CF post you linked to in my browser. That actually looks like a fun project.
Cheers

You guys think ill be fine with whatever housing the HID vendor here sold for a little while? I like the idea of that DIY projector housing. I just have to fix another jeep issue before I address this.

It can be done for about 100 bucks. Any decent housing with plastic backs and some morimoto 2.5 or better projectors will be just fine. I sell the hell out of Spyder headlights and they use the 2.0s and I've literally had a handful of returns that had anything to do with the projectors.

So pretty much what that guide says to do? Cheap ebay housing, those $110 projectors, and a pair of shrouds then do some cutting and modifying and they're good to go?

It sounds pretty easy. It looks like a bit of a challenge though. But I love projects like this.

I was hearing issues with either the bulbs burning out, the housings leaking, and it kinda turned me off to them. I asked a few friends and the ones with HIDs loved them.

HID bulbs burn out too.... And H4 housings are just air inside, they're meant to leak, just like the ones you'll be putting onto your Jeep, haha.

So I'm going to go with the housings that were used in that DIY projector project, since I will be doing that as soon as I can. The page says it came replace bulbs and everything, but I was wondering if it'll be an easy swap in and out for the HID bulbs or if any work needs to be done to it.

Here it is:

Gotcha, and Im not sure I do see why you couldnt if the 'plugs' and bulb style, the thing that locks it into the housing(idk the real name) are the same.

I have h4's with autopal housing with 90/100 wtt bulbs with a harness and Im not kidding you when I say that my bright go up to 1/2 mile with a visual light change and easy lights up the tops of mature trees. And not once has anyone ever flashed their lights at me.

Hell when I have my brights on and pass a road sign the glare back into my eyes is so bright. hahahah its awesome.
