I have the pathetic 2.5l straight 4 in my 1984 jeep cherokee xj has well over 200k miles, and i saw blue smoking in the exhaust and original owner didn't maintain the engine either. But the body is really good. Time for a motor swap. I want to swap a gm 60 or 90 degree v-6 from 1986 to 1990 out of a chevy celebrity or something along that line. I have the ax-5 transmission right now but i want to put in an ax-15, or could i stay with the ax-5? What would be required to do this swap? I want to try to keep the budget around $2500. If thats possible but i want to try. The previous owner also did a egr and many other things he deleted and was thinking of moving to Idaho but they have emissions laws. What is a list that would be required to do this swap? I saw a decent amount of aftermarket parts for this motor. And could even supercharge it to, to pull out a little more power. Im new to motor swaps and jeep xj's in general but i'am skilled and can fabricate a lot of things and have a good sized garage of tools.

Uhm no and why?
get a parts jeep with a running I6 and swap over. A carbed 4.2l would probably be easier for you than a EFI 4.0l
Your budget is what I'm building an entire new stroker motor, upgrades and manual transmission with... Dont waste it on a useless swap, you can supercharge the I6 to.

a jeep straight 6 is boring, everyone and their mom has one i wanted to try something different you know? out of the box maybe? Ls would cost way to much, i was going to do a 4bt cummins swap but the cheapest motor i could find was $1800! And i heard the gm v6 will bolt right up to the ax5 tranny. what are the other options? 350 motor?

but if that's what i'm stuck with ok. I cant find any running straight 6s and if i do they want over a grand for them. I just thought the v6 because my local junkyard has to many of them, engine and wiring harness included. Should i hit the wreckers for a straight 6? How come so many people do the v6 swap then? my neighbor v6 swapped his tj and it runs good and a turbocharger later it sounds healthy!

I never even heard of the v6 swap but I wouldnt search for that either. For ease of rebuild, aftermarket parts availability and cost I would go 350 if a V engine. I believe the "era" should be right so OHV and I just like I6 engines.... BMW FTW hey swap in an m30 3.5l I6 they handle boost great sock upto 15lbs and 450hp wait maybe I should do that....
yes lots of options with the 242.... 4.7 sttoker anyone. eaten m90

i really dont wanna be that guy, but id suggest that if youre asking this question, you dont do it. i would say just go with the straight 6. everything is bolt up. you can even stroke it. rebuild it from the ground up with the budget that you have. but everything bolts right back in no mounting problems, no difficulties.

Thanks that'll probably be what ill go with then. will the ax-5 be able to handle the straight 6? I don't want to get a new because i have a lot of upgrades to the jeep already and my grandfather gave it to me. Will i need to cut the motor mounts off the frame and move then for the straight 6? four wheeler magazine said something about that but i haven't really heard anyone say that?

There is a sticky here on upgrade the gm v6 that came in early xj to a chevy 3.8. Unsure if it would transfer easy seeing early years were simpler computer systems.
