Not worth it.

The 88 has a Vacuum Disconnect axle, it's weaker than your current axle.

its worth 50 bucks id say. you can take the vacuum disco shafts and mechanism out and use your current long side shaft. or modify the mechanism to stay locked. or even get the posi-lock cable. or even swap out just the gearset into your current housing.(if you know how to set up gears)

The housing is still the weak link.

2 tubes pressed into a cast disco-housing...not the ideal configuration. Single tube from inner-c to the diff housing is much more desirable.

Why take a step backwards?

If the gears are stock, swap out the carrier and pinion and don't worry about the set up. I've done it 4 times and never had a hickup. Definately avoid anything to do with vacuum discos

i would agree. however i have never seen a broken disco housing and quite a few bent non disco tubes and cracked housings. granted you dont see the disco housings on the trail as often. seen any pics of failure? come to think of it ive never heard of any.

The shims are behind the bearings and the housings are identical. You can do whatever but I like saving money when spending it is not needed

Clearances change, especially on housings that are over 20 years old.

No 2 housings that old are going to measure out the same. And in a spot where thousandths of a inch matter, you're pushing your luck

Like I said, I've done it 4 times and never had a hiccup. One such occurence had me stuck with a broken rear yoke and only front wheel drive for almost a month and never had a problem. My 05 Silverado has another truck's carrier and the stock shims. I actually checked the set up there and sure enough... dead on. I have faith in my cheap a$$ ways

Actually I've been a pro for 10 years now but I'll take the shadetree thing as a complement since I've built most of my vehicles out in my front yard without the luxury of having a shop. My $hit works so I wouldn't exactly discredit my advice. I've seen an axle bend into a U but the dude did jump it 30 feet off a cliff. Mass array of stupidity can break most anything

Pro huh? Is this something you would actually do on a customers vehicle?
