I run 4.56 gears in mine with an auto. I turn about 2800 rpms at 80. It is a little more than I would like but not many options for the front diff. I tried 4.10's and no good. Would jump in and out of over drive

I would recomend not to run anything less than a 4.56 but personally would run a 4.88. The only gear sets I run ar Yukon and swaping out gear set's can get pretty involved if you've never done it do alot of research before you try it or find a buddy that has done a few. You will also need a mount and dial indicator to set up the proper backlash.

What type of driving will you be doing? I drive a lot of hw and I want decent milage and I am in the same boat as chafe... There isnt really anything good for 35's if you went 37's you would get metter mpg with 456 gears

To keep your XJs 4.0 litre engine in its stock power band in effect giving you your best mpg with a 35" tire you will want 4.88 gears. I currently run 33s with 4.56 gears and I wouldn't run a bigger and in effect (heavier) tire with hese gears. I plan to switch to 4.88s at the samer time I switch to 35s. I get 16-18 mpg with my current setup. I expect I will get the same when I switch to 4.88s/35s.
