Default Gauges

My 88 XJ dash has lights instead of gauges .. I could very easily install a simple gauge cluster from the auto part store but I want it to look right.. Will a real gauge instrument panel from a later model like an early 90's fit to replace my existing "idiot light" panel?

Yes, swap the gauges and use the correct sensors/sending units.

Try searching for guage swap, going to swap one in 89, guage panel is out 90. The new sensors were kinda pricy at napa, so if anybody knows were to get them less expensive that would help a lot. Have a Happy Thanksgiving !

Rock Auto just make sure there for gauges when ordering. Or get them from gauge cluster donor vechicle.

Thanks for answering my question..

Sorry I asked a question that's been answered short of 90,000,000,000 times... Ya think something covered THAT many times would have been plastered all over every page in every issue of every 4x4 magazine since 1988...

Well there is this magical new thing called google? I think it's witch craft and such because all you have to do is type in what your searching and hundred of references pop up!!! Can't get that with a magazine and book! It scares me sometimes just by how quick it is!!! My god it's a scary good thing, most likely sorcery or witch craft but man oh' man is it snazzy. You should try it some time.

Just saying....

Interesting since That magical google machine is what led me here.. Doesn't look like it did much good since instead of a simple answer all I got was some punk attempting to be a smartass.. Which is sad since it was just a simple question... It's been fun but I can see y'all don't take to kindly to new people to y'alls forum...adios

Na we take kindly to a lot of new people, as long as they aren't ignorant and dumb lol sorry you fell in to one or both category. It's not hard to go in to google advance search and type "jeep Cherokee gauge cluster swap" and find this site, naxja, and jeep forum showing write up and plenty info showing both for the late and early model gauge cluster swaps. So hey good luck with ignorance. Lol

You need an '87-90 gauge cluster
http://jeepin.com/features/gaugeswap

Oil Pressure Sender
Temperature Sending Unit

Demonoid, calm down.

The speedometer sender was switched from mechanical to electrical in 91 I believe, so as said above, only the 87-90 cluster will work. As also said above, you will have to replace a couple sensors. It's pretty straightforward.
