Has anyone experienced such an issue with a steering box?
Earlier today I happened across a thread on another XJ forum where a guy said he had a similar issue & it turned out to be the box. I had a bit of a commute home this evening and noticed that every time it popped, I could feel a small amount of lost motion in the wheel. I can envision a broken tooth on a gear that whenever it has pressure on it, it may skip to the next tooth and cause the clunk / pop and also the feeling of lost motion.
I found my Clunk, Clunk...
A friend took a look while I turned the wheel and moved the XJ a bit and noticed the Track bar was moving to the clunk sound. I thought I had a worn ball joint.
The noise was coming from the upper mount, it had a loose bolt.
I had a clunk up front and checked everything ,turned out to be the drivers side motor mount which is hard to see because of the airbox ,maybe check your mounts out.Track bar mount at the frame did it once too.Im betting on a track bar issue though
Wao, lots of tech I can't even digest...My Jeep clunks on right turns ususally when I go up a ramp to the highway or exit. Where do I tell my mechanic to start looking?
Thanks in advance!
