Default Front Skid?

Any real off road value to the stock front skid that came on some XJ's? I have an opportunity to pick one up and wonder whether it is just more of an impedence off orad than really worth. Any thoughts?

It can save your, uh, front sway bar? Maybe prevent bent tie rods if you're sitting stock. I only have mine because I like it painted bright green.

Some guys see it has a hassle, just impedes normal maintenance. After your lifted and what it doesn't really guard any of your suspension, I do however, like knowing I have a huge beefy piece of steel guarding my oil pan and other things from limbs or rocks.

I have one just for a piece of mind. Protects steering box, some linkage and oil pan and give the unibody some added strength. It's well worth it.

if your wheeling in areas where there is snow and ice its a huge help so the ice n snow isnt breaking up on all ur steering components.

It is good for stock height, I do not see it doing all that much if you are lifted 3+ inches.

Anydrawbacks to it? I am on a 3"ift and 33's. Wheeling for us is mostly trail riding, rocks and woods.

I don't mind it being in the way maintenance wise.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Pros
-blocks logs/sticks from being able to jamb up into front of engine
-gives me somewhere to mount rock light [gotta look good for night shots]
-stiffens up unibody
-does provide some protection for steering even when lifted

Cons
-Some say its in the way.....its never bothered me when working under there and if it does its 5 bolts.
-Personally i had to slightly mod mine when i swapped in V8ZJ steering, but that was no biggy.

honestly they go for $10-20 and mild protection is better than no protection, ya cant go wrong.....and as other said ya get to paint it what ever color ya want....mines OD Green to match my diff covers

i've got one on both my jeeps and always keep an eye out for em... the one in my wheeler has kept some killer tree branches/logs n such from snagging on anything under the engine... on my DD mild trail toy it does the same but also keeps the engine bay fairly clean from mud splashing around and dust as well.. it even keeps the snow from packing in along the bottom end too... kinda forces it down to sweep under the axle instead of just piling up and slowing ya down.

Plus.. if you decide its not what you wanted.... people are ALWAYS looking for em and they're super easy to see.
