Cool Front Differential Choice: What do you have; Why and How do you use it?

Hello all,

After searching in a few terms I did not find the info I was looking for so let me ask you all:

What Front Axle do you use?

What Differential did you choose?

Selected Gearing & Tire size?

How do you use your XJ?

About to purchase some parts for my rig and wanted to see what lessons and info we can trade here before throwing the cash down. I suppose I will go first with what I think I will be running:

Dana 30 High Pinion
Limited Slip - not sure which yet
Going 4.56 with 33's
Primary use is driving to work in snow/ice up 17% winding grades.

Thank you for your input, I really want a front dif that is not air, electric or cable - it just kicks in during front 1 legged slippage.

HP 44 with 4.56s and a Spartan on 38. Gears aren't low enough but I'm not regearing it I'm going to replace it with a 60.

Dana 30 HP, 4.88 gears, Aussi locker, Almost alloy kit from Iron rock off road with spicer joints in stock shafts. 33 goodyear wrangler MTR's. Its just a toy now (used to be my dd). I drive it 2 hours up north to crawl rocks, climb sand dunes and play in the mud. Trail ride it alot. The 4.88 is a little tall on the Eway with 33s. It works really well in low lock on the rocks tho. I have it sleeved with c gussets also from iron rock offroad. Its seems to be holding together for now with a stock motor. I may go to 35s someday. We will see what happens then.

Nice setup, do you have manual hubs or how does that Aussie locker work for you driving on the street? Is is fine so long as you are 2H? I like the hands off design so long as it doesn't jack around when driving on winding paved roads

What is the Almost Alloy kit? Looked at Iron Rock website and didn't see it. Thanks.

I ran an Aussie front and rear with my stock axles and didn't even notice it on the road in 2wd except for popping sound when turning real sharp at slow speeds. Still didn't feel anything just heard it.

HP Dana60 with 35 spline Chromolly inners & outers and 35 spline Chromo drive flanges. welded (fully locked) diff, 40" tires now, (next set is 42" stickies) so I have full hydraulic steering, otherwise couldn't turn the wheel...

4.10 gears but I have 2 transfer case set-up for gearing. Exclusive rockcrawler/hardcore trail rig. zero pavement.

I used to run the hp dana30 with chromos, 4:56 gears and a ARB with 36's and never had any problems with it.

HP d30 in Stock trim with 3.55's (behind AX15), 33's and Its by DD and toy. Regularly wheel it, drive cross country and I'm not nice with it but hasnt let me down, I just dont drive like a fool. Front lockers suck in snow/ice

Cool Good Price?

Thanks for the replies and info! Anyopne else care to share your front axle setup and how it works for you?

I'm leaning towards an Aussie locker due to price, and I have to buy a new carrier for the 4.56 gears anyway, and open housings are like $67 and some change for the cross pin and washers the Aussie needs.

Unless someone can suggest another front dif that is a good locker in 4H/L but has good manners in 2H on the road.

F250 HP44, 5.13s, 3/4 ton outers, nitro chromos w/spicer 760s, ox locker, 35s.

gearing is perfect, its a driver and do-everything wheeler. drive 70mph to the trail, wheel it, drive home, drive to work the next day. nothing hardcore yet (it's this rig's first season) but i don't expect many problems.
