Default Front d30 axle..LP or HP?

How do I tell if my front D30 axle is low pinion or high pinion type D30? And can a C8.25 be LP or HP also? If so how can I tell? If it's an LP, how can I convert it to HP?

Thanks

you want a hp and you can tell by the front axle on the back your front drive shaft connects to your pinion yoke and turns ur pinion if it is at the top of the pumpkin you have a hp d30 if it sits near the bottom of the axle housing you have a lp

Yup, 98's have the HP. '00-'01's are t he only XJ's to come from the factory with the LP D30.

As for the 8.25, the only change made was spline count, from 27 to 29, in '96/'97. All 8.25 have the same pinion placement.

Most 00-01 models have 2 extra front catalytic converters. The low pinion clears the exhaust. Good ol CA emissions stuff.

They did it because they were ending the Cherokee line in 2001 so instead of making more separate high pinion d30's, they just used the low pinions they were putting in the tj's. I have a 2000 and swapped in a high pinion and there are no clearance issues with my exhaust.

Previous owner of mine swapped in a high pinion on my 2000. I cant even put on my front driveshaft dude. It scrapes like crazy... even being lifted 4 inches and with the front ds off. Its the cats man.

Really? Maybe the PO redid the exhaust in a dumb way? I'm at 4.5" and my exhaust isn't even close. And my XJ was originally sold in DC so its all cali'd up. I've never heard of anyone having an issue like yours.
