The turndowns will cause the noise to bounce back up and it will be just as loud. If you want it quieter inside, pipe the exhaust out the back with no turn down.

I just cut the turn down end off of my new tailpipe and replaced it with a straight out the back pipe that ends even with the bumper. Its quieter INSIDE than it was stock, and I'm running a louvered core Magnaflow(straight through).

I would shy away from no cat and no muffler. I just bought a 97 with no cat and but with a muffler and was planning on fixing everything when I put different headers on (current ones have a small crack). Just yesterday the muffler fell off, I'm already sick of how loud it is, and I like my trucks loud, but this is just crazy obnoxious.

I ran my 44 until I dropped on on rock and smashed my cat. Cut it off right there. Loud. You could always cat delete. I have no engine codes and no problems. I am leaving it off for other reasons.... like my front u joint pinched the exhaust right after the down from the heads. I think it has more power...

not to be the one to rain on the parade but talk of taking off and removing a cat is against forum rules.
if a mod comes in and reads that, bad things start to happen.
stay on topic and dont mention taking off the cat unless talking about replacing with another one
hint: (at least pm each other that kind of stuff)

Removing the cat on a street jeep is illegal but let's say this is a farm jeep its no longer street legal or used on roads.

Mine has no cat or muffler its not stupid loud but it can get annoying. Personally for a deep throaty tone I recommend a v8 cause you just won't get it out of an i6. That being said you can do a 44 as its plenty loud and gives a bit of low end rumble. I'm going to stick with open header though as I'm not really a muffler/cat kinda guy

Someone helped themselves to the cat on my MJ when we weren't at the house. I discovered this the next time I started it, and was shocked at how LOUD it was. This is just a truck to use around the property ("farm vehicle") but I plan on putting a section of pipe in to replace the missing cat. Its RIDICULOUSLY LOUD. I don't think it a good idea to use a really short exhaust with no spark arrestor that exits under the truck.

Having just replaced my muffler and tailpipe on my XJ, I had the opportunity to hear it (1) straight from the cat, (2) from the cat with 18" of 2-1/4", (3) from the cat through the Magnaflow, (4) through the cat, Magnaflow and 18" of 2-1/4", and finally with the OEM type tailpipe installed. The cat does seem to knock off some noise as opposed to the open, catless pipe on my MJ. The Magnaflow knocks the high frequency, raspy sound off, and the 18" extension (straight) cut down on the resonance inside the XJ despite exiting in front of the rear axle. Adding the OEM tailpipe brought back some of the resonance inside despite its added length that dumped the exhaust under the rear bumper. After I cut the turndown off and added a straight section that exits straight out the back and just beyond the bumper, its quieter inside than it was with the factory muffler. My wife will be happy.

You totally rained on our parade ! I would never do anything illegal to my jeep, I meant take my cat off and get a high flow cat...DUH.......I mean, I don't dare drive 51 in a 50 and I ALWAYS use my seat belts, and proper turn signals. I cannot believe you would even think I am that way, you should be ashamed....That being said...I do forgive you and thank you for pointing out that it illegal on CF, for those who didn't already know....

One major difference between the 40/44 and the 10 is sound at idle(the 10 being a good bit louder), and the sound at higher rpms. The 10 stays loud through the power band whereas the 40/44 kinda dropped off after 3500rpms. Its really about how loud and what kind of sound you want. The 10 series isn't going to be waking up the neighbors or anything but its plenty loud enough to get you noticed.
Thank you for your input, Are you running stock cat and manifold with yours? I don't really want to do anything but cut my stock muffler out and put in the 10 series, then connect my tailpipe again....I am just trying to get an idea of sound....I just put some Discovery M/T's on it and they hum pretty good...so I would like to hear some exhaust too.

Go over to youtube and search for videos of cherokee exhaust or jeep xj exhaust. The best sounding to my ear was some mishmash with a double tip outlet on a single exhaust. I think there was one with dual exhaust, but don't recall that it had split headers, so more likely a dual outlet muffler with dual tailpipes.

Im running a high flow cat, banks header, and 2.5" piping. You won't need to do anything other than cut the old one out and weld the new one in.

Here is an xj with factory pipe and 10 series and 3" tip.
