flowmaster super 44 series question
Good afternoon everyone, I have been looking at the flowmaster super 44 mufflers and I really would like to get one. Does anyone run these on there XJ? I wanted some feedback as to how it sounds and any performance it might give. Also if anyone has any pics and suggestions of how easy it is to put it on. My XJ is a 98 with the I6 and auto tranny. Are the inlet and outlets the same size as my pipe now? do they use the OEM hangers....etc....Thank you in advance for all your answers...I love this site!

I bought one with a dual out and just welded it right after the cat. It is extremely loud, but I am hoping the turndowns that I ordered would quiet it down. I think if you get single out to the same size as you stock piping and leave your tailpipe it should sound real good. There is also a guy in the Vendor's Sections that sell the mufflers and tailpipe, I think it's straight bolt on as well.

I send the Super 44 with the kits that I sell. From what I heard most people really like the way they sound on the XJ's. If your looking to just replace the muffler you need part number 942447 which is 2.25" Center / Offset.

thank you, i will check it out. I would like to run dual, but I dont really want to spend $500 on an exhaust. My exhaust is fine now I just want something throaty and aggresive.

I went to the performance cure website and clicked on super 44 up top and there was an error. What are my options that you sell as far as kits and stuff?

i have this super 44 flowmaster, it's very loud but i like it. I have instaled a exaust heade with 2.5" tube directly to the Flowmaster, it's sounds like a FORD F350... If you don't care about it then buy it... girls turn arround lookig at my XJ everywhere... jajaja

Why do you like the 10 series better and have you noticed any major power gains from any of the series? Also, is the 10 series more throaty than the 40 or 44 series? Thank you

If it sounds like a 350 something is wrong. Big time. The rest of it I agree with. And yes it was already asked today and I will say the same thing. Cut out your muffler and put a pipe were it was and it will sound just like a 44. I have done side buy side comparisons and it is true. Just as loud but not louder same deep rich sound.

If I cut out the muffler won't it mess up the back pressure that I need and possibly throw my check engine light? I don't care about emissions and I was gonna take off my converter also. I cannot run open pipe can I?

Yes, it will run fine with just a pipe between the cat and tailpipe, but the muffler is center inlet, offset outlet, so you'll need to bend pipe or use flex pipe 2-1/4". It will sound better, less harsh, with some sort of glass pack at the minimum to knock off the high frequency sound.
The OE tailpipe is 2-1/4". Increasing that diameter will give a deeper tone. The Dynomax tailpipes, and those supplied by mudfrog are 2-1/2".

No major power gains with any of them but I like the 10 series because it is very aggressive and throaty. I ran the 44 for about a year and got tired of the sound so I switched to the 40 and ran that for 4 years on two different jeeps and then got tired of it so that’s why I switched to the 10 series. One major difference between the 40/44 and the 10 is sound at idle(the 10 being a good bit louder), and the sound at higher rpms. The 10 stays loud through the power band whereas the 40/44 kinda dropped off after 3500rpms. Its really about how loud and what kind of sound you want. The 10 series isn't going to be waking up the neighbors or anything but its plenty loud enough to get you noticed.

About backpressure, you don't need ANY. Backpressure doesn't help your engine run, maintaining proper exhaust velocity does. if you remove the muffler, backpressure should decrease and exhaust velocity should be similar. Same goes for the cat. Just remember, if you take too much out of the exhaust then you might run into a low RPM torque shortage, as the open pipe will flow extremely well and drop the exhaust velocity. However, running all straight pipe at the stock diameter is likely more than small enough to get a good low RPM velocity. The exhaust pipe for our 4.0L is pretty undersized at high RPM, which means it's the right size for good low RPM power.
