Your gonna have to do a lot of fabrication to put something else up front. I have a 44 but it was going to take too much for me to install. Once you get it in then you have the problem of alignment, unless you have an endless supply of $$. But it can be done.

so best(least expensive and less aggrivating) route to go would be sticking with the dana 30 and upgrading the shafts and gears

si.

d30 hp isn't too much weaker than a d44 anyways. They have the same size u-joint which is still the most common mode of failure. Alloy shafts will make the weakest link the carrier which flexes and allows the gears to break. Full case locker will take care of that. Housing can benefit from some trussing as well.

d30 polished up enough will handle some 35's with minimal breakage. Any bigger and you'll probably want to skip the d44 step anyways.

Although since yours is a 2000 you should have a LP d30 so you would probally want to swap in a HP d30 considering the HP d30 is stronger

99 and down are hp but watch out for disconnect axles stopped 92 IIRC, but high pinion means the pinion is above the centerline of the axle the low pinion is the opposite

i really wouldnt waste money getting a hp d30. its marinally stronger. im running a lp 30 locked on 33s. i would get some alloy shafts and u will be good. i didnt break anything till i locked it and havent broken anything since i put in alloy shafts.
