What are you wanting to do with the lights? If you want to run them on the road, roof lights are probably a bad idea as they give a lot of glare on the hood (and widshield depending on where they are on the roof) and as far as I know illegal prettymuch everywhere. Here in WI you can't have any axuilary lights above the centerline of the headlights. I mounted two driving lights on the bumper for night driving on the highway.

I plan on using them mostly off the county roads here in Califorina. Not going to use them much if any on the road. Here in Ca it is leagal to have "off raod lights" And there can be up to eight of them. The have to be At least 16inches off the ground and and no higher than 12 inches off the top of the roof. so its legal. just one catch...they have to be covered while on the road. there are some specs on this page, http://www.liftlaws.com/california_lift_laws.htm.

So the glare on the hood, is it enough to not make the lights much worth putting them on there?

The glare doesn't make them any less relevant. It isn't that bad

The glare you get off the hood or windshield is just a slight inconvenience compared to the added visibility on the trail!

Default Black earth for 50 ft radius!

Blazer brand lights, clear pencil beams and yellow fog wide beams, cheap at $35 pair, I don't get upset when I wreck one. Run dual feeds from dual solenoids, your lights will pull up to 4 or more amps each. Run good solid heavy grounds also. I bring the supply wires up unside the door seal. There are some great lighting setups on the forum, have a browse and use what works for you. (my next plan is to use a half dozen of my old siverstars headlites on a new fabbed roof mount, as the high beams still operate, the roof Blazers will move to the rack as side lighting).
