I have no clue on the buick engine, but you can swap in a chevy 3.4L.

You'll have a really hard time getting the 231 in there as it's not a 60* like the 2.8. For the minimal gains it's not worth all the work you'll end up doing just to get it in.

Also, I would stay away from the 3.4 v6. They had many problems no matter what year it was produced (intake, timing chain, spark plugs) and they are a pain to work on. Run the 2.8 'til it dies and then find a 4.0 XJ for cheap.

Actually the Buick 231 V-6 is a phenomenal motor and very worthy of swapping into a Jeep. I had one a Pontiac Ventura many years ago and it was surprisingly fast.

After market support has always been pretty good.

That really doesn't help the OP very much.

Let's stay on topic and let's try to actually help the guy.

Okay?

Got it.

I would wait and find a 4.0 or I've heard about people using the vortec as a swap. Don't know if you're interested in that route?

The 231 is a great engine, but for all the work needed to swap it in, I just don't see the payoff. The upside to the 231 swap though is that the bell housing from the 2.8 will match up so that's one less thing to worry about

I'm pretty sure the 4.0L won't easily fit in the 84-86 XJs...AMC had to rework the firewall in 87 to fit the 4.0L

It'll fit, just got a take a hammer to a spot or two. I know a few people have actually said if you remove the front clip that it doesnt take a whole lot to fit it in.. But if i was going through all that work to make new motor mounts, i'd probably just throw in a 5.3...
