Post Engine surging and cut-out

I have a 1988 Cherokee 4.0 and without warning it just stopped running. I started it right up and it ran for about two blocks and cut-out again. Once more I started it up with no problems and luckily drove to the begionning of my driveway before it cut-out again. This time when trynig to start it, it coughed and belched and finaly started only to run at 3000 RPM. When I gave it gas it choked out. Same thing every time I try to start it. Won't idle, and once started at 3000 RPM, it slowly ends up choking out. I've checked all vacuum lines and electrical connections. The throttle body assembly is clean and none of the injectors are leaking. Any suggestion??? Thanks

You could try checking the fuel pressure at the rail. My 88 had a similar problem, I never zeroed down the issue exactly, but I replace fuel pump relay, fuel pump sedge unit and fuel filter and it fired right up and has never had any issues since. I spent about 150 after taxes through o'rielly auto.

Sounds like a faulty TPS or MAT to me. I would start by checking the out put voltages. If that is not it I would look at the MAP sensor next.

Here is a great page of Renix era diagnostic procedures: http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/...iagnostics.htm

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Turns out it was the fuel pump assembly, someone had done a makeshift repair on the hose from the pickup to the pump, and it finally fell of and wouldn't work. Also then changed the fuel filter which was almost totally clogged with sludge. That reminds me to change it every year (if I am going back to BaHa to play in the sand). Otherwise, about every 2 years.
