Default Eliminating NSS (Neutral Safety Switch)?

Has anyone ever eliminated the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch)? Can you? Do does it cause other problems if it always thinks it is in neutral.

Nnever done it. But I'm sure it can be done. Could be dangerous if an unsuspecting person starts it in gear.

I would never do it. Just as a save your ***. They don't generally go bad, just get dirty and need cleaned. Search about it and see why..

It does not really cause "problems". Just that your reverse lights won't work and you can start it in any gear selection if you bypass it.

My 97 wiring harness included a jumper for the NSS. Taped to the loom inches from the unit its self. Now I can start it in gear if needed for an emergency. Sure it could be dangerous, but most people who forget don't usually let the rig run away. Just a foot or two when bumped by the starter. Oh and my reverse lights work just fine. Not sure if the pre 97 years are effected. I would do it if I was you, but to each his own.

The question wasn't bypassing the NSS, it was eliminating the NSS. If you eliminate or just disconnect the NSS, your reverse lights won't work... doesn't matter what year XJ you have. If you have OBD I or OBD II (91-01) it will trigger a CEL. There's really no point in eliminating it, just refurbish it and move on.

I am interested in bypassing or eliminating the NSS for the chance it could cause a no start some day. My 96 XJ is offroad only and get run through a lot of deep mud. I am even interested in installing a manual switch for the back up lights. Does anyone know which wires to splice together to cause the jeep to think it is neutral all the time? I am mostly concerned that it may cause the automatic transmission not to shift. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

For an off-road rig, I would collect the NSS plug from a JY so you had the pigtail to splice into rather than hacking your harness. Here is the pinout for the NSS. All that the NSS does is provide continuity between two pins so, for instance, if you jumper pins A & E, your reverse lights will illuminate.
