Default "Dry engine" first start

Hi Everyone!!
I have had two opposite opinions to the matter of starting my newly rebuilt in-line 6 i just finished putting back in my 2000 xj....
One person said i should buy special oil and an oil additive for the first firing, and that I had to try to turn the engine a few times before firing it up...
the other, said no need for any of that, your opinions and are appreciated, this is my firs rebuild, Thanks!!

There are many options. An example- Many cam shaft kits come with a break-in oil to put on the camshaft . Who rebuilt the engine? What does the info that came with the motor say?

Yes. I would ask them. You do not want to void any warranty that they might have.

crank the motor for 20-30 secs then let it fire up, the oil will have circulated plenty and should be safe.

Prime the motor and use a ZDDP heavy oil.

I would call the shop, most places will "prime" the oil with a drill to get the oil at the desired pressure for a couple min so the engine is coated.
But deff call them and ask!

I've been told to hold the RPM's up too to break the cam in. Might want to ask about that, as i've heard it from several different sources but i don't have any first hand knowledge about it.

This is super important, along with using a high ZDDP oil.

CompCams has a cam break-in procedure on their website.
