Long story short it changes the ratio between how many revolutions your driveshafts take compared to the tires. I went front stock size tires to 35's and power, fuel economy and just plain driveability suffered. Dog on hills and always hunting for gears. I put up with it for a year but it finally just got way to annoying.
With the new gears it drives and feels better than stock. Pulls hills without downshifting, gets up and goes. 2250rpms @ 60mph instead of 1450.

Are you an auto or manual trans? I have no problem with stock gears because I'm running a 5- speed, but I rarely use 5 th gear anymore

It's harder on your transmission, It's something you'll want to do but you could get away with waiting till you can afford it.
It's a much bigger deal usually for the guys with the 5spds, they smoke clutches and kill it a lot with tall gears and big tires.

Actually its harder on automatic vechicle than stick .With only 33 its not that bad at least speedo needs to be recalibrated .easy fix is finding 4cy 4x4 xj factory 410s swap in whole housing the sell 355 to guy with stck model...

I wasn't referring to it in reference to the vehicles durability , I meant mostly driveability. The heat generated in the automatic would eventually kill it, and a clutch is a hell of a lot cheaper :-)

I have 3.07 gears and a 5-speed. When I put on my 31x10.50s, I noticed that it does take a little more power to get moving. I wish they were 31x9s or 31x9.50s, but the tires, wheels, and lift kit were all free. The weight difference could be the primary contributor to my power loss. Hills are a little bit harder, but not too bad. I lost a couple MPGs, too, according to my GPS. I went from 24 MPG to about 21-22 MPG. I plan to get that back with some engine upgrades soon.

Most likely 3.55s if automatic. The gears and rebuild kits are usually the cheap part, as it's not something someone should do on their own if their not familiar with gears it's the labor that's expensive. Most shops charge over 500$ per axle. I bought my 488's, rebuild kits, new carrier all for 725$ delivered to my house.
