Or just put the cross pin back in until you need to re-install the axleshafts and c-clips.

I was considering doing the conversion. But after looking into it for about $400 I can swap to a Ford 8.8 with disk brakes. Seemed like the better way to go.

I don't think Big David's kit is that much. Either way you'd need to spend the same money on the 8.8's brakes, no?

The 8.8 I got already had Disk Brakes on it. Came out of a Ford Explorer. Got it at a salvage yard for $150. You can get a conversion kit online there are many to choose from. That has the spring perches, shock mounts, and all the hardware needed.

And all the brake components from the salvage yard are actually usable? Are you in the southern US?

Yep. The Explorer it came out from under had only been at the yard a short while. I was surprised myself when I picked it up. Live in Missouri. I told the I was swapping it and needed good disk brakes. I got a pretty good deal I thought $150 for the complete assembly.
