I ran a newer one in my 44 front and it was pretty awesome. But when shafts break, they tend to take the detroit internals out with them, as i had learned the hard way. Replaced it with an open carrier with a lock-rite in it.
Ran an older model detroit in the rear of my xj later and there was a clunk when getting on the throttle, like there was a lot of play in it. Sometimes after long highway runs I would get off an offramp and it would make a horrific bang too and jolt me to one side. It always locked when i wanted it to though. Was just annoying, but I got used to it.
Ended up breaking a shaft back there, and guess what, it took the detroit out with it too. Replaced it with a full spool.
I won't buy another detroit locker.

my detroit rear is probably my favorite upgrade. I run it in an 8.8 with chromos on 33's so I'm not too worried about breakage or an issue like KTM had. I picked it up from a friend on NAXJA for $280 this thing could be 6 years old for all I know. but it is dead quiet on the road (auto trans) and the only time I notice is I sometimes feel it clunk and engage when I accelerate around turns, and sometimes I hear it disengage when I decelerate. I love it off road it's quiet reliable traction
but I'd be hard pressed to buy one brand new for $650 or however much they cost. I've been eye balling the yukon grizzly locker instead for that price. and I don't think I'll ever buy an auto locker for the front

I run one in the front and rear. It was in when I bought my XJ and I love them. The rear makes a little noise when going around a corner, at low speed, but otherwise I don't notice it. Off road they work great.

Look into the Yukon Grizzly.
Its a stronger case and internals
Has under cut gears to allow better locking.
Is typically 100$ less.
and Awesome warranty.
Let me know if your interested in a price or ordering one.

Name any locker and you'll find a critic or someone who's friend's uncle drove the Baja 1000 backwards and never even heard it click/pop even once.
Take all Pro/Con comments with a grain of salt.
If you can find a couple local drivers that use the locker you're interested in, on the same type of trails you drive on, they will be be your best source of real-world info.

i ran one in the rear of a cj w/ a ford 9 " axle for 5 yrs w/ over 8o k miles on it . they are super strong & always locked until they sense the need to unlock then they relock when both tires are back to the same rpm. thats the bump feel & or noise that happens, it normal operation. you get use to it. ive had them in 3 different jeeps over the years, they work great offroad. @ $600 they aint cheap but you get what you pay for.
