X2 on what Slick said. Too much work. I know many people go for the D44 before the 8.25 because it's a stronger axle but it's not THAT much stronger. The 8.25 would be fine for what you are looking to do. That's what I run with a locker and it's great. I would personally go for the 8.25 over the D44 due to the fact that 8.25's are much more common, are much newer, D44's are over inflated in price due to demand and lack of availabilty, and if you need something for the 8.25 they are almost everywhere. If someone has a D44 and say you need a shaft, most people that own them don't want to part them out. So you have to buy the whole axle. Atleast that's what happens in my area. I'm not saying the 8.25 is stronger or better than the D44, it's just more accessible and easier IMO. I don't want to start a debate between the 8.25 and D44. It's been done a million times already.

HOW DARE YOU! lol

I agree. The 8.25 29 spline is a great axle. If a D44 for an XJ fell into my lap I would take it and run. but if the D44 cost more then the 8.25 I would rather save that money and put it twards shafts/locker...

I only swapped my rear to a D44 to match the lug pattern for the front (I hate adapters)

If you are planning on going threw the work to remove and weld on new mounts might as well go with a explorer 8.8 , same work more beef lol

But back to the OP's original question. just lift it, enjoy it. worry about other bridges when you get there. lift it and learn to drive it as is, then build from that platform when the next $$ ship sails in and you will be better prepaired for what you really need/want.
