8.25 has never been offered as a high pinion, but it'll be fine with the 29sp shafts, mine is welded and has been holding up just fine. Like said it will eat up tires (so will a ratcheting locker) and it'll make some tire noise in like parking lots and sharp slow turns, once you get moving along a bit you'll forget all about it. Also as said its way more predictable then a ratcheting locker as well.

sorry if this has been answered, mine is an Australian 96 XJ, not sure what axle is in the rear, but it has an LSD, can i just weld it shut or is there a minispool available for it? or am i better off selling the LSD center and finding an open center to weld up?

biggest factor in my not wanting a fully locked diff, i have been told the axles are weak as and will twist up if i lock the diff. i think ill end up with 33inch tires, but for now, theyre 28s.

Could be either one. A picture would clear all guesswork...

disrergarding the type of diff it is for the moment and besides the increased tire wear, would i be increasing the chance of snapped axles if i lock it and run 33inch tires? at this point, im not even sure its going to be driven on the road much as i currently have a company car. so it would mainly be a weekend warrior.

any ideas?

If its a Dana 35 yea it'll definitely be more likely to break a axle shaft with a locker and 33s, with a 8.25 not so much though. The 27sp 8.25 will handle 33s just fine, and a 29sp 8.25 will handle 35s without an issue.

Just regear, eliminate the welded gears and add a selectable locker.

Ive been running a welding rear end for 2yrs now and the tire wear all depends on how you drive what tire and wheel combo you run.

i suppose you can bring the width in a bit and run super hard tires, but generally, with a spooled rearend your rear tires will wear twice as fast as the fronts, there is really no arguing that.

yes tire wear will be greater than a open diff no question i was makeing the statement that if you figure out a setup it could increase the tire life. my setup of 33x12.50x15 on a 15x10 wheel has a pretty even tire wear for being two years olds. I can say these have lasted longer than the tires on my other cars i used to own.

ok, so regarding axles breaking, i want to run wide offset rims, so are you saying a wider track width puts even more load on the axles when locked?

the axles are already regear, so to remove the carrier (which the spider gears are welded directly too) i would havta reset the backlash for the 4.56 gears. trust me im contemplating doing this but atm dont have the time nor the money for it.

another question for those of you who have run a welded rear end, do they "break in" after time? iv been running it now for prolly 2-3 weeks now and its gotten continueously easier to turn, with less chirping and less dbl tire spinning on turns. is this normal? or did i break something lol.

It's definitely not normal, with the spiders welded up there is nothing to move and therefor nothing to break in.

thats what i thought, legit i get no body roll now when turning and can take not only regular turns but tight turns with no barking or chirping from the rear end. and while i have wheeled it i didnt try anything that i hadnt tried when i was open/open i just could actually make it up those obsticles with ease.
