I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have some questions related to this topic (mainly for California Drivers, but food for thought none the less).
Spectre will pass CA emissions, but what about the homebrew method??? If the stock air box is kept, would It be acceptable?
I have read about people using something like a buick 3.3 airbox in its place, but i am fairly sure this wouldn't fly with CARB.
Also, has anyone done the homebrew mod or the spectre Cowl CAI with a hummer style snorkle? If so, pics would be very nice.

Also, what do you guys think of this for a "Hummer Style" snorkle?

I just finally got around to putting a cowl intake on my Jeep last weekend.. haven't had a chance to test it yet as I'm waiting to redo my lift, gears and rear axle swap.

I bought and installed the Spectra intake. Very thorough kit and instructions. Its loud when its cold but makes a cool growl when you mat the gas. I dd my xj and am going to modify the kit a little bit-going to pick up a 3in 90* aluminum pipe and poke it through the cowl and put a H1 style cap on it-to raise it up another couple inches and also help it breath a little better,..(when it snows and ices over-it covers up the cowl where it sucks the air in and makes it hard for the motor to breath).
Other than that i love it, i would recommend it to others looking to free up some hp and give it a cool whistle/growl

Okay soo i modified my spectra cowl intake a little bit this weekend because whenever it would snow the cowl vent would ice up and not let the motor breath.
I picked up a 3in wide 90* aluminum pipe, a 4in pvc cap, and some self tapping screws and this is what i came up with
-
Cut the firewall, cowl, and cowl vent so i could fit the pipe in
-
Bed lined the pipe and cap and went for the test fit
-
Tossed the cap on and this is the final product
Solved the icing problem and reduced the intake noise drastically

Ran my homemade intake (above) for the last, no issues with rain, water coming over the hood, or snow/ice building up on the cowl (I rarely clean the snow off lol). Planning on swapping the setup into my new XJ and testing it even harder next season!

It's really no different than how a stock Jeep TJ intake tube runs from drivers side over the engine to the air box on the passenger side.
