some use the stock airfilter in the stock position and iv seen some put a filter inside the cowl . What's best? and for the filter going inside the cowl, anyone have a part# or what kind of filter you used that fits inside the cowl??

I have mine in the stock air box for now. Will be installing the Spectre intake if and when I run into the need for dual batteries later. The thing I would think about if you want to put the filter in the cowl, it will be a lot more work to get to it for servicing. With it located in the air box, it is a lot easier to change filters or clean a reusable one.

That's true, but why do you need to wait til you get dual batteries in order to run the spectre intake?Originally Posted by 98XJ40K

A filter NOT inside the cowl is a better design for two reasons:
- Easier to service or replace
- Any splashing water from rain or a minor dunk in the water won't wet the filter itself
Aside from being easy, a reason to run corrugated tubing from the cowl to (whatever) is that water can easily get caught on the walls and never make it to the filter

I use the stock airbox with a 3 stage sponge pod filter, works great and I can wash it/re oil it whenever it gets dirty.

I don't really need to wait. Just more like that is what I'm going to use as my excuse to spend more. The snorkel I have now cost all of $30 to make, no reason to change it until I need the space.Originally Posted by 1998xjspt

I used a K&N p/n RU-5111 inside the passenger cowl area.Originally Posted by 1998xjspt

I have the Spectre kit. Its great. With a little di-electric greese, it is very water proof (assuming your cowl drain works). Haven't had any problems with it. Install is a breeze. The only complaint (for some... not me) is that it has A LOT of in cab noise. At low-medium idle it sounds like a shop vac... at high rpms it sounds pretty good... almost like a race car haha. In any case I feel much safe with it that much higher. (lots of river crossings around here)
